I had favorable winds on today’s cycling trip from Sata Misaki to the Okura in Kanoya, so I wheeled in more than an hour ahead of check- in time. They were very friendly and kind, giving me Room 301 well ahead of the stated check- in time. The staff were great throughout the visit. The room has a double bed with a very nice damask duvet, a good- sized work desk and a coffee table with two chairs that strangely look like they came from an Addams Family production set. No real view from this room; rooms on 4F and higher would have a nice view of the surrounding city and hills. The bedding was comfortable and the room was very quiet, so I slept well. Breakfast was good, the breakfast room was open and spacious. As is common in Japanses hotels like this, there was a staff lady keeping the breakfast place spotlessly clean at all times. The Onsen was fantastic - small, but nice. The lobby has a number of great models of aeroplanes and ships, owing no doubt to the proximity of the large Defense Force base nearby. I would certainly look here first when booking another visit to Kanoya.

The New World Hotel, and Kanoya itself, are a part of Japan that tourists don't usually come across, and that I only accidentally experienced. With that in mind I really enjoyed the place and will return. Kanoya town seems to have experienced a slow economic decline over the decades, and the New World hotel is reflective of the town's earlier status as a place people who aren't from there might need to go to, businessmen especially. The hotel surely had some kind of heyday decades ago , traces of which can still be seen in the lobby and the fading carpeting and the water stains. Also reflective of the time warp is the fact that the entire hotel has only one floor that's non smoking. The rooms bore ancient TV trays from the pre-flatscreen era, and once-exclusive bedside tables with built-in AM/FM radios. But the people were nice, and the sheets were clean, and the onsen was weathered but still pleasant. The area around the hotel seems shut by day but wakes up at night: it has quite a few little restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the hotel. I will return here to look around further: it's worth the detour from Kagoshima's more well-known sights.

In all of my Japanese travels, staying at Yukusa Osumi Umi no Gakko was truly a unique, memorable and transformative experience. Yukusa is a treat for anyone who wants to experience a mix of the "real Japan" along with a twist. A quick breakdown... This hotel is the result of a renovated 100 year old school with a private beach, which is rare in Japan. The hotel itself has hostel type rooms, private rooms, and rooms for big groups / conferences. There is a chocolatier located onsite, along with local food goods such as "Fish Jerky" and teas. An silk screen studio called "Suddo" also exists on the property, allowing guests to create custom silk screen prints and print them on whatever their heart desires. A restaurant / cafe called Sanovoi is located in the back. Customer service makes up the heart of the operation and any questions I had were quickly met leaving me feel satisfied throughout my stay. The hotel itself is tucked away in the Japanese countryside along a beach in Southern Kagoshima, Japan. If you've ever seen the Ghibli movie Princess Mononoke, you'll recognize the feeling of wandering in a lush green world deep in the heart of nature. (Side fact: The place the movie was based on, Yakushima, is a ferry-ride away from the nearest ferry port!) Staying at the hotel truly felt like a unique experience. It's truly a unique experience to stay in a Japanese classroom. My room in particular, 2-1, was one of the more big hostel / conference style rooms, covered with tatami matting. Many futons lied in the back of the room ready for use. A chalkboard in the front of the classroom was welcoming, with illustrations of the staff with a message of "Welcome to YUKUSA" written in English. Waking up next to seaside views were the best. Sounds of calming waves crashing into the coast were relaxing. The landscape was equally exhilarating. From my room and the outside hallway, I was able to see a volcano, Sakurajima, could be seen in the distance to the right and the mountain Kaimondake (also known as the Mt. Fuji of the South" could be seen to the left. The food was amazing each day, and a true place for any foodie looking to experience Japanese foods. I was able to enjoy a variety of local Kagoshima delicacies daily at the restaurant Sanovoi. I was treated to a variety of different seafoods such as Kanpachi fish, shellfish, chicken, noodle dishes such as udon, locally famous sweet potatoes, and many more dishes. Speaking to some of the staff including chef, I was equally amazed that a lot of these foods were locally-sourced. I learned that the reasoning behind that was to make a community-first hotel experience, which was certainly felt. Each day I was invited to try something new by the hotel staff. The thing I was looking forward to the most however, existed in the hotel — the silk screen studio called Suddo. Suddo means "to print", but said in a local Kagoshima dialect. I work with silk screen printers back home. This experience however gave me an intimate experience to do it myself with the help of a wonderful staff. I was able to send them my own design I created on my Macbook. They asked me what I'd like to print it on, so I choose a t-shirt. They then printed out the screen print and handed me a variety of framing tools so I could create a silk screen sheet myself. After building a silk screen sheet, I was able to choose from a variety of colors and learn how to create a print on my own t-shirt. After a couple tries, I made my own shirt which was exciting. The staff was extremely friendly. Although they primarily spoke Japanese, they all tried their best to explain things in English. I never felt like a couldn't express something. The front desk worker was also great at speaking English. Whenever I had a question, or wanted to order a taxi, they were quick to help and went above and beyond to make sure I felt like I was at home. The surrounding community also has it's own unique energy to it. It's a fisherman's town, with a sweet oceanside salty smell to it. The people are friendly. Kids to adults walking by all greet you. Walking north along the coast for 15 minutes brings you to a beautiful shrine located on an high-tide island off the coast called Arahira Tenjin. Waking up in the morning, it's a quick access to the island during the low-tide walking across the white sand beach. The shrine sits on top of a steep hill, with steep steps, where you literally have to pull yourself up with the help of a rope. The views from the top of the island show a beautiful seaside. Sounds of cicada and birds can be heard in the summertime. Also worth mentioning is the bike shop next-door, which was created by a former mechanic who has a passion for cycling. It carves it's place into this area's rich marathon cycling roads, providing a destination for anyone looking to tune up on their ride. Bikes are easy to rent here as well for the casual rider. Since the facility is near the oceanside, it's easy to participate in water sports as well. A private beach extends down a path behind the hotel with a cozy beachside cove looking towards the blue waters. An inviting rocky path lies to the right-side, where you can find unique things living in the waters on it such as sea urchin and crabs. Paddling (SUP) boards can also be rented from the facility, with staff onsite that can help you use them. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a chance to get away and experience something new!
