Not fancy but comfortable

The hotel was pretty much of a standard to be expected in this part of Iceland. We had to check in at Hotel Torg down the street. Our hotel was totally unstaffed and we had a code to enter the building, Breakfast was also served at the other hotel and so there were NO amenities in our building at all. The room was comfortable and we had a corner room with a view of the main area of the town. Plenty of parking behind the building which made it convenient.

Awful customer service

Reviewed By PipPaul W

We were due to spend 2 nights here, last night and tonight, Monday and Tuesday night. On the Sunday evening we were checking existing and forecasted road and weather conditions and it was clear to us that they would be such poor conditions we would not want to be driving through them. Regrettably we were inside the 48 hour still have to pay cancellation period. But we messaged the guesthouse asking that they forgo the cancellation fee. They said no and there then followed a series of messages where they were saying that the roads were "passable/driveable" and I was saying I wasn't prepared to drive in those conditions. We instead headed south and still had to drive many sections at 25 kph in almost zero visibility -only one snow poles length ahead - on packed ice and snow. The official road maps for going north up to Isafjorda at the time we were driving south showed road conditions and temperatures even worse than those we were driving south in. Sometime during Monday we also got an email from our car hire company advising of severe weather and to NOT TRAVEL in the Westfjords area. And today, Tuesday, when we should be in Isafjorda, is early afternoon and the official road conditions map is showing roads in and out of Westfjords/Isafjorda as closed. And still they insist we could have got in. Crazy, crazy decision making on their part.

Country Hotel Heydalur

a true escape from it all

Reviewed By Warren V

Heydalur is a horse farm 80 miles from the nearest grocery store and town. It is truly isolated although there are some summer houses in the area. It is in a mile wide valley with a river that flows into a 8 mile long fjord that empties into a 50 mile long fjord. The three bedroom house is quite small (600 square feet) but very cute. It has all wood walls. Each bedroom is only about 80 square feet, but the living/dining room is big enough for a dining room table with seven chairs, a sofa, and two (wicker) sitting chairs, plus a cabinet. All the other rooms (3 bedrooms, kitchen, and entrance room) connect through the living room. The views from the living room are incredible. You can see the fjord and the rest of Heydalur, a mile away. There is a wraparound deck on three sides with a big table, four chairs, and two grills. The beds are all double beds, tight for two people but quite nice for one person. They are just soft enough to be comfortable, unlike most beds in Iceland which are quite firm. One bedroom has a bunk bed, a double below and a single up top. The bathroom is really small. It has the smallest toilet I've ever seen in a rental, and low to the floor. The shower is about 2 feet by two feet. Large people might not fit. The showerhead is small but the water is plenty hot. The kitchen is just as small, maybe 8 x 8 feet. The fridge is an undercounter, small fridge, the same size as many hotel mini-fridges. Since the nearest grocery store is 80 miles away, the assumption is you won't have much food and won't be doing much cooking, which was true for us. We could cook pasta with sauce as that doesn't require refrigeration. There is a four burner stove with a small oven. It was the smallest stove I've ever seen. There is no dishwasher, but you probably won't have many dirty dishes because you won't have much food. For food, we mainly went to the restaurant next to the hotel rooms. It is a converted barn, a large room with seating for about 50 people. The food is excellent, on the simpler side, but very fresh and tasty. I recommend the trout and lamb dishes, and all the desserts are tasty. Service is very friendly, mainly using young people for the summer. Any requests we had were quickly accommodated. It's a very friendly, low-key environment. They have lots of horses for riding, but you should book in advance to make sure you get the ride you want when you want. All in all, we had a great experience. We were lucky with the weather. There are lots of outdoors things to do, but not much else as the nearest museum or shopping is an hour away. This is a place to get away from the city and distractions, and just enjoy nature. Finally, I thought the price of lodging and meals were the best value out of everywhere we went in Iceland.

Hotel Reykjanes

Reykjanes is located in Isafjardardjup on northwest part of Iceland, Isafjardardjup is biggest of the West Fjords in Iceland. Reykjanes is located 300m from the main road to Isafjordur. The view from Reykjanes is spectacular; there is a variety of hiking routes and you won't easily forget the unique stillness of the morning and evening. Our 12 by 50 m swimming pool is one of a kind, it was built in 1934. We have a natural sauna or steam bath, both exploiting the abundant, naturally flowing hot spring water.

The pool

Stayed at the camp ground. Had nice bathrooms, showers at the pool were great, pool was awesome. Hot spring fed, it was as hot as you could stand at the south end and cooled as you moved north. The view was amazing, if the aurora was out it would the absolute best place to watch it from. Check out salt works next door while you are there.

Isafjordur Hostel

Great location, nice common area, tiny rooms

Reviewed By vanhoskier

I was supposed to stay here for 3 weeks while taking a class, but chose Hotel Edda, because the room I was assigned here was so small it barely fit me, my husband, and our 2 small bags. The hostel was very clean and the bathroom was clean and adequate. The common area/kitchen was very well appointed. If you don’t mind a small room and guests coming and going, this is a good hostel. If you are a backpacker looking for a clean place with a hot shower, you are good to go here. If you need some space and privacy, look elsewhere.

Not a success

Reviewed By KatrienB142

Very noisy (extremely thin walls and ceiling) and no curtains (so expect to be up at 6 am in September), so didn’t sleep well at all. The room smells like mold. The kitchen is basic with only a few things, no fridge for guests (only for staff), the cooker was broken, everything is sticky and dirty. Didn’t feel comfortable at all using the kitchen. I would think things needed to be cleaned better after a pandemic…
