The 10 best hotels in Hammamet, Tunisia

August 13, 2022 Oliva Fomby

Sunbathing, al fresco dining and late-night discos are a way of life in Hammamet, the Tunisian St-Tropez. Located on the fertile Cap Bon Peninsula, about 40 miles south of Tunis, the bayfront resort is surrounded by verdant hills and citrus groves. When not basking on Hammamet Beach, browse the markets for local pottery or wander through the medina (old city) with walls that date to 1500. Summer brings festival fever to the city with plenty of music and theatrical offerings.

La Badira

La Badira, member of the Leading Hotels of the World, recounts Hammamet's illustrious past, since Paul Klee's trip to Tunisia in 1914, followed by dozens of artists, such as André Gide, Arletty, Oscar Wilde, Jean Cocteau and Sophia Loren. All came to Hammamet in search of the rare quality of its light. La Badira has 130 suites of 45m² to 160m2, five restaurants combining tradition and innovation, and the only Spa by CLARINS in the country. Intimate spaces have been created in and around the hotel with a library, an indoor fireplace, La Badira cocktail bar, and jasmine and bitter orange scented lawns. The shop, dedicated to local craftsmanship, illustrates the authenticity and charm of Tunisia. Like travelers, writers and adventurers of the last century, guests feel at home and with friends. La Badira represents all the charm of yesteryear revisited with a modern approach, a place where regular visitors and newcomers can mingle with simplicity, elegance and discretion.

Best customer service at the pool

We left La Badira today. Check-out time is noon. We wanted a bite to eat before departing as the next time we would be able to stop for a meal was going to be late at night. La Badira's restaurants open at 12 noon. We asked for the menu at 10:30 am. Although the kitchen was closed, our waiter, Kamez Turki, surprised us with a delicious chicken club sandwich and fries to be shared by my husband and me. What a wonderful treat on our last few hours at La Badira. I give Kamez 10 on a 5 rating scale. We have traveled all over the world and today we had the best customer service experience across six continents. Mr. Kamez Turki, thank you!

Staff and hotel good, resort not so good

Reviewed By stevejG864BV

I visited at the beginning of the season and in Ramadam, so please take this into account when reading my review. What makes this hotel is the staff and the French guests! This is a mainly French-speaking guest hotel, but they were all friendly and made the effort as I don't speak French. The hotel staff were good and did make a lot of effort for you. I appreciate that this is a tip based culture but nonetheless I still felt they wanted to help throughout my stay. The food was okay, they are trying to cater for long periods of eating and so the food did sit there, so often it was cold or at best warm. There were lots of options throughout the meals, including salad. The sweet section was probably the best, to be honest. They tried very hard with at least two freshly cooked items section, but sometimes they cooked off some of this food beforehand. Drinks - The beer was very good, red wine was not so, cocktails were okay but basic. I have no complaints as you have to respect this is a country where alcohol is not part of their culture. Facilities - room was good, big bed, clean and so no complaints. The hotel did not look that tired which considering COVID and looking at some of the other hotels it has been kept in good condition. Safe is 3 dinar a day, you felt you had to pay for every extra, some of which should have been part of the price. WIFI was good and I had it throughout my room and hotel at no extra cost. TV had next to no English speaking, but that is life! Animation staff are very enthusiastic, so I was probably their nightmare as I wasn't interested in their entertainment. This was throughout the day including dancing by the pool, bowls and the evening entertainment, which felt basic. They were polite, friendly, lively so if you are taking the kids they will definitely appeal, as they do to guests in their early 20s The local area is a big drawback as I got frustrated leaving the hotel and having people pretending to work at the hotel asking for tips and they could be difficult if you were firm with them! There were many hawkers who were better, but I did have some begging when I didn't want to buy anything. Taxis tried to rip you off and that just stopped me from wanting to go out. Positive is the beach, I went on a long walk, walking in the sea and that was lovely. Yes, the people still started to get involved with you, but I just walked deeper in the water and made it clear I was not interested, pretending I could not hear them. Shopping - There is a shop within the hotel but the shopkeeper, in the end, was a pain and I actively avoided him by changing my route to and from the bar/restaurant. There are two Medinas one new and one old, the latter I did not go to the latter as I did not want the hassle of walking the 2km or having the pain of the taxi drivers trying to charge 70 Dinar. If you want to buy anything and do the Tunis tour Tunis Medina has so much more. Cash Points I was advised to go to ones attached to banks, but at Carthage land where the new Medina felt safe as there were security guards. I did get charged 12 Dinar for using it. Health and Wellbeing, this was okay, not cheap, but you can choose if I am being mean here. The sales guy will get to you on day one (trust me, but then leaves you alone) They offer you a four day 2 hour deal at £200 which shocked me as that is a lot of money full stop. I did the one day, 2 hours (it was probably closer to 1 1/2 hours) I definitely felt relaxed and the massage part was as good as I have had anywhere. Trips - Within the hotel, there is a guy who has basically two trips but if you walk from reception past the shop and you will see lists of different companies and trips they do, so there are a lot of options. I think later in the season more people will be present. The guy who was the only one based in the hotel was only offering quad biking and a ship ride on a motorised modern replica pirate ship. I did find him a little bit hard sale, but I went on the Quad bike at 50 (pounds). He promised you would have tea with the bedouin but that never happened, but that could have been a seasonal thing. It wasn't cheap when you consider everything, but you were out and about for 90 minutes, though did stop for about 20 minutes in the middle of nowhere, no refreshments, just a break from riding. It is slow driving, but I was at the back and let a gap build and then zoom, plus they do take those who want to go fast off and keep a slower group. I did enjoy it a lot though. TSS who did the transfers came to see you and offered about four trips. They have a 2-day trip which does a lot and stays overnight in a hotel etc. Out of season, they wanted £300 PP, seriously who goes on holiday expecting to spend £600 as a couple. I went on the day trip for £41 which was okay, again this was at the beginning of the season and many this would change. You start at 0900hours and the guide is great, really liked him. You drive for about an hour to Tunis and then go to Sidi Bou Said, which is beautiful but very small. For 5 Dinar you can go into one of the houses and have tea it's so worth it, especially with the guide. The view of the bay is beautiful but outside of that it's about being hassled with the shops which all sell the same thing, I would say do go into some of the ones on the left as you walk back down the hill as the inside of the building is amazing architecture. You are there for 2 hours far too long. Then you have lunch in Tunis which is okay and the finally go into Tunis, it felt safe, to be honest. The Medina was lovely and interesting, but the guide did not want you to go off the main street. Again 2 hours was too long and everyone was back earlier. Transfers - I paid 38 pounds through Lovel Holiday, but shop around as I was told by someone they paid 7 and Easy Jet was 16. I am glad I went to Tunisia but I am definitely not planning on another visit anytime soon.

Really good- great hotel!

Over all fab! If I could have given 4.5 I would, however just a couple of small reasons it’s not a 5! After a very long journey of delays and queues it was a breath of fresh air to be greeted so warmly by the animation team and staff.. we had a count down to holiday and really started it so well- best welcome ever! This was the theme over the whole week- they work tirelessly and always with a smile on their faces. Particular shout out to Wael who looked after us in the beach bar a lobby bar - lovely chap-and to the infamous Mamo! What a character- 24 years he’s been a lifeguard there!! The family room was great, 2223- had a separate bedroom and toilet and a lovely sea view from the balcony.. stunning. My only complaint here would be the loo smelt a bit but they cleaned every day so unsure what that was about! Our friends had the room next door 2222- much larger balcony but Tui and the hotel were brilliant for arranging the rooms next to each other! Loads of great pools- main pool a bit too noisy for my liking!! Beware. Water slides were great - we had 2 9 year olds who went on them all! Again staff are great and loads of life guards so very safe. Beach is stunning and just a stones throw away. Lots of entertainment but found it slightly too late for the kids. Beach party was excellent! Great fun. Food over all was great, lots of choice but for me being gluten free breakfast was tough and rather boring- cereal and fruit every day! We did ask but no gluten free bread so we warned- take your own! Drinks were also great- actually got bottles of wine! The bar by the pools was also good for food at lunchtime if you didn’t fancy venturing up to the main restaurant. As I said ..over all very good and we all had a fab time - thank you all at Manar and to Tui!

I just been there for a week and find this hotel awful, it is a shame for Steigenberger hotels chain. Forget about 4* or 5* resort. Very, very rude people, no customers service at all. Simply, they don’t care about the clients. During our evenings/nights it is an incredible noisy around, playing loud music for a bunch of people. Food it is not eatable, very repetitive, it is not tasty, they offer you just fatty chicken, ox liver and poor beef like chewing gum also fish is horrible. All food is smelling badly. I have had strong stomach upset because the food it is not fresh. In conclusion, this is a maximum 2* hotel, it should be removed from Steingenberger chain ASAP. Not recommended, stay away from them if you don’t want to ruin your holiday!
