NileIt nails the camping experience

Reviewed By turkce_bilmiyorum

I've dozens of years experience camping in the bush, but this was my wife's first time to ever sleep in a tent and she very much enjoyed it. Sometimes you hear people joke that their form of camping is the local luxury hotel. Well, if they ever tried NileIt Resort they might find it is very much like that sort of experience. We only decided that morning to go to Jinja, but needed to do some other things before we could leave; so, it was the middle of the afternoon before I called NileIt. No problem. They had room and when we arrived just before sunset, they had our tent all set up and the bed made. They also made getting there easy sending us a photo on WhatsApp of the sign we needed to be looking for to make the turn and our GPS led us directly there. The last few hundred meters are down a dirt road that can get muddy and might require a 4X4 in certain conditions. It had rained and we found the road slippery, but encountered no real troubles getting there. I appreciated that the facility is fenced in on three sides (access to the Nile means that one side is open) and there is round the clock security. The staff was very friendly. They waited till we had settled in and then offered to prepare us dinner, but there was no rush. The menu was quite varied with local foods and Thai foods dominating the menu. My wife choose pork chops and I sweet & sour pork with red curry. Both were prepared as ordered and were certainly good, but not superb. Meaning that I have no objection to the food and would certainly eat there again if staying there, but I wouldn't make a special trip for the food. We felt similarly with regard to breakfast which was a respectable eggs to order, 1 sausage, 1 strip of bacon, and a variety of fruit along with tea, coffee, and juice. Breakfast was included in the price of 220,000 shillings for a tent with a double mattress in the sleeping room and two lawn chairs in what qualified as a sitting room/entry. It did not rain while we were there, but based on all my years of camping I was satisifed that it was built well enough and properly set up so that we would have stayed dry in the rain. While we were cautioned to be prepared for it possibly getting cold at night, I actually found it quite warm in the tent -- so much so that I didn't need the very nice comforter our bed was made with. Sleeping is a tent that the staff sets up and takes down for each set of guests, so there is no ensuite bath. I found the shower house and toilets exceptionally clean. Do take a flashlight with you in case you should need to use it in the middle of the night as the electricity is turned off part way through the night. I actually appreciated that because that made it dark enough to enjoy the stars. That you are spending the night in a tent that is not a permament structure also means there is no charging of your phone overnight. Fortunately there is a charging station at the lodge where meals are served. The grounds are well maintained. My wife loved all the different varieties of plants and flowers. Mosquitos were not a problem, but do take proper precautions as they are around. The 'pool,' if we can call it that, is less than a meter deep. You can sit in it and enjoy cooling off, but not swim. It's too small. It's an above ground pool that one might purchase for your backyard, but we liked how they designed the brick to surround it and may copy that idea in our own compaund. As for activities, the resort doesn't really have anything onsite, we asked about a couple of things and they offered us brochures from other local companies that provide what we were looking for. It was then up to us to make arrangements for ourselves. Not a problem when you know the area as we do, but if I was from abroad I would be needing a bit more help -- and maybe they can provide it, I don't know as we didn't ask. All-in-all, a nice place for just sitting back and relaxing. I think next time we might take the kids, but if we do we'll get them their own tent.

Super Friendly stuff

Fantastic to come back to Jinja and see everything and everyone come back to life post-pandemic! I passed by Basecamp twice last week. One afternoon I dropped by for a chat and a snack: home made tortilla chips plus hummus and guacamole dips ? I stayed one night in one of the Safari tents. Each has two single beds and was warm and comfy. It's a tight squeeze! The bathroom / shower is a shared affair in the main living area. Note: some of the rooming options changed during the pandemic but it remains an extremely good value for money option for budget travelers. Thank you to the super friendly staff. Had a great welcome. I particularly appreciated being shown my tent during one of Jinja's occasional power outages. (Guests are provided with rechargeable lamps) and the compound has good security. The camp seemed to be a hive of activity. A big group of volunteers had arrived from Europe on the day I stayed. It's wonderful to be traveling again!

Myself and my wife together with our two little girls hit the road for Kapchorwa on Saturday expecting nothing but an exciting stay in the Eastern part of Uganda and true to our expectation, we enjoyed every bit of our stay at Rafiki Lodge Sipi. The view from the lounge is breathtaking! Despite our family cottage having more that 4 beds, there was still plenty of space for the kids to play about as the weather was rather chilly for them to play outdoors. The staff were very friendly and helpful, meals were always on time and the guides were awesome. Sam and Sharif were always on hand to ensure that we were aware of the attractions in the Sipi area. For us the highlight of our stay was the visit to the Sipi falls and the man made caves, guided by Sharif who took time to give us a glimpse into the history and culture of the locals. In case you are travelling to Sipi, I highly recommend you contact Sharif on +256 703 584617 or Sam on +256 781 827963.

Sipi Falls lodge

You are paying for the view

Reviewed By Jane E

I stayed 2 nights at the Sipi Falls Lodge (which was apparently previously called the Sipi Falls Resort). The view of Sipi Falls is perfect from the grass terrace at the front of the lodge and that is one of the main reasons for coming to this guesthouse. The guesthouse itself is pretty average but the quality of the accommodation is not what it is all about so don't hold your breath. My room was large but a bit minimal. There was a big bed with mosquito net, a strange little annex with sink and unplugged mini-fridge that is probably intended as a kitchen but completely unequipped except for running water, and a large bathroom. The floor in the main room was concrete with tiles in the bathroom. The bedroom also had a couple of cane chairs and coffee table. The bathroom had a geyser that worked well but was switched on from outside the room which is a bit awkward first thing in the morning. There was no shower curtain or enclosure around the shower box but a shower curtain covered the window. The floor of the shower was very slippery but much less so wearing the flip flops provided. There was no closet, just a few pegs on the wall and the wooden deck out front had an unplumbed, conventional bath set in it which was not an issue but pretty weird. The lodge has no internet. The staff were reasonably helpful and I appreciated the hot water bottles provided each night. The restaurant served plain food without much choice but it was fine for a couple of nights. My only real complaint was lack of cheap accommodation for drivers. My driver had to pay full price which was pretty poor considering that they were not full and most lodges provide discounted rooms for Uganda drivers/guides. The Sipi Falls Lodge is a reasonable choice if you want a superlative view of the falls and don't mind average accommodation and services.
