Traditional ryokan featuring warm wood construction, gardens throughout, relaxing onsen baths and gourmet kaiseki meals. You can wear your yukata robe and use our wooden geta sandals to stroll around our onsen town, Togura Kamiyamada, and explore the many small shops and eateries. Our town also has geisha and we would be happy to arrange an interactive 30-min. geisha show Centrally located to the best of Nagano, such as the Snow Monkeys, Matsumoto Castle, Hakuba, Alpine Route and Karuizawa. Our American owner is happy to share this slice of the Japanese countryside with you. Free pick-up at Togura Station.
I'm Japanese. But Kame-sei Ryokan has reminded me of the true Japanese cultural tradition. After having made a conference at the University of Shinshu, I was very tired, and arrived late at Kame-sei Ryokan. And they served us immediately amazingly delicious local foods of Nagano. They provided edible wild plants, carp, chars and salmon in a variety of cooking methods. The table was filled with so many dishes that we couldn't eat all. After that we enjoyed bathing outside. In the early morning, we bathed again. It was really fantastic! So I made a Japanese poem like this : Kawazu-naku hayashi-no naka-ni yu'amishi-te, ko-no-ha sugiyuku kaze-no oto kiku In the woods where a frog is croaking, I enjoy bathing hearing the sounds of winds, blowing from between the leaves. Thanks for this great experience!

Hotel
I stayed here during a business trip in July and could not find fault. The room and hotel were up to date. The bed was firm which suited me, en suite bathroom Japanese style ( short, deep bath). Didn't use the onsen at the hotel so can't comment. The staff were very accomodating and pleasant. The breakfast was Japanese / European style. There was free wifi at this hotel which worked perfectly adequately. I have no reservations about staying here in the future.

When we first checked in, everything was good , the English speaking lady and the door man was very polite and accommodating , but then after a while the service of the other staff just got bad, Do bare in mind this is the most luxury onsen hotel in town. Yet the service they provide is just so so, Food are terrible here, any ramen shop would be better then this. The concierge is pretty much useless, we call and ask him for ramen place, he say there is no ramen here, and recommend us a sushi place. 2nd time we called and ask what is open nearby the restaurant as we are outside and late and hungry, he told us ehhh maybe a Chinese restaurant, and that all. For a concierge at this service with this price, it’s a rip off Rooms are nice and beautiful, they have private onsen on each room. Maybe we book the special ones. Anyway, I would give it 3/10 if ur considering to stay. Elsewise , room and facilities are fine

I picked this hotel because I wanted somewhere inexpensive. Therefore my expectations were limited. It was far better than I expected . There are two hotels owned by the same company each side of the street . It was quiet and clean and has a kind of retro 60s look about it . (This is due to the age of the building and is not intentional) The bathhouse was very nice and provided everything you need including toiletries and towels . The breakfast was a buffet style and there was enough choice to keep everybody happy. The staff were polite and helpful , I don't know whether any of them could speak English or not . My only criticism is that the lighting was a little dim especially in my room. Also the inane background music bled into the room. I found that rather irritating . Thankfully they switch it off about 10 PM . There is a wonderful river side area called Chikuma nearby. This is great for an early morning or late evening walk . The town is pleasant and there are several small restaurants and other places to eat . It's not super convenient, being about 20 minutes train ride from Nagano, but if you are looking for a budget priced place to stay, you won't be disappointed .
