This brand new youth hostel located in Chatel, in the heart of the french alps and Les Portes du Soleil just opened its doors. A young and dynamic team of locals will lead you to a nice and cosy room or dorm. Fully equipped kitchen, TV lounge, bar, and so many more common areas will help you spending a great time here
My friend and I arranged a short ski holiday through sunweb over the New Years period - we could only go on specific dates so choice was limited. Skiing (and apres ski) was the priority so provided we got those things and a roof over our heads, we were sure it would be fine. Having said this, the holiday was, interesting, mainly because information and guidance were just not available. Therefore this review, I hope, will help others staying at Chatel 1861. Firstly, the accommodation is great - absolutely no frills - but clean with friendly staff and even a decent breakfast. However the location is NOT. Chatel 1861 is 2 miles from Chatel where everything is and there are no busses back from the town after 6pm. I didn’t see a single taxi so we were left with no other option than braving the 2 mile walk. For us it wasn’t too bad as the weather bearable (chilly but no snow), however the walk does take 45 minutes even at a brisk pace. A lot of the journey is walking on the road with no pavement. Anyone booking with sunweb, be warned that your lift passes will not be at the accommodation (as normally happens) or at the central lift station (as is described in the paperwork) so make sure you get in touch with your rep asap to track it down. Leonie (our rep) was actually based out of another hotel (2 miles from Chatel 1861) and was unable to drop our passes off to us. We had to get over to him prior to skiing on the first day which ate into skiing time (and not the greatest customer experience). In between Chatel 1861 and the village of Chatel is the Linga lift station, but be warned there is basically nothing going on here after 6-7pm (apart from a pizza place called the Sno cafe which opens late. Although this place is slightly strange as when we popped in on our mammoth walk home on night three, I was sent away as it appeared I had interrupted a family dinner despite the bar being open!!) The main bar in Chatel is the avalanche bar which was pretty uninspiring, no happy hour, no live music, and the beer selection was like a central London pub (camden pale ale, Stella and Guinness). The busses from Chatel 1861 are a bit confusing so make sure you grab a timetable from one of the “ligne A” busses. We found information about where and when they go, very hard to come by. Portes du Soleils is a great ski area but just be aware that a holiday at 1861 will involve a lot of walking and a lot of contusion!!

The hotel restaurant Fleur de Neige is situated in Chatel in an exceptional environment at the heart of the Portes du Soleil resort and the Abondance valley. At an altitude of 1200 meters, amidst the total calm and near to the ski runs, the center and the Lake of Vonnes, a charming mountain style hotel in a most privileged position with panoramic views over the mountain summits and the village. Philippe Trincaz and his son Sébastien, along with their wives Christine and Karolina welcome you simply in a warm, family way. The hotel has 23 rooms of which 17 have been recently renovated. Each room has a balcony with breathtaking views over the mountain and the village. Double, family duplex rooms and a suite offer a cosy atmosphere. An area with a hammam, sauna, jacuzzi, massage room, heated pool (open air in summer), shaded terrace. Relax by the fireside to share your family moments or a drink with friends.
Very cozy family run hotel, short walking distance to the city , restaurants and even gondola (Both sides) although the owner can takes you there. Service with a smile 11 out of 10 . Don't expect fancy place but very very warm and cute which is by far more pleasant to stay. Reach Breakfast

The hotel and restaurant, La Bergerie (Sheep-fold), is located right in the center of the resort of Châtel. You can easily the ski pistes connected to the field of the Doors of the Sun. Our hotel**, style country cottage, offers his cordial reception with its 26 rooms and comfortable studios to you.
We stayed in the hotel for a brief three night stay for skiing. The hotel is in a good location close to town and with a bus stop outside for the ski shuttle service. The bedrooms are a bit dated and in need of modernisation and the bathrooms small, but the price reflects this. Continental breakfast was adequate with cereals, bread, croissants, ham, cheese and yoghurts with plenty of coffee. The staff, particularly the owner were friendly and extremely helpful.

The Roitelet is located at the edge of Chatel ski resort, near the village centre and the ski lifts. It offers free Wi-Fi access and chalet-style accommdation. Most rooms at Le Roitelet have a private balcony overlooking the Alps. They are all ensuite and have a TV. Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast and regional cuisine at the Roitelet's restaurant. It features a terrace with panoramic mountain views, where meals can be served during the summer.
We had a wonderful stay here over the New Year. It was the perfect home base for our ski vacation. Our room was small but comfortable, and our balcony had a beautiful view. The shuttle to the ski hill stops directly outside the hotel, which made it easy to get to and from the slopes. The hotel restaurant was a highlight for us as well - many nights we opted for the set menu there and were never disappointed. The food was always delicious! We found all the staff very friendly and welcoming, and we would absolutely recommend this hotel!

What a lovely hotel! Beautiful dining room, bar and snug area. Comfortable bed, and a very handy boot room. The food was the best hotel food we’ve ever had. 4 course dinner every night. Particularly enjoyed the French onion soup, tartiflette and the fondue night. Breakfast was also nice too. They even put on a little takeaway breakfast for us before our 6am transfer back to the airport which was a great touch. Bus stop right outside, which takes you to Super Chatel, Linga or Pre La Joux. Hotel is conveniently placed in the centre of town so easy walking distance to some lovely shops, bars and cafes. Some of the staff could have been a little more friendly. On arrival, a member of staff walked straight past us without a welcome and there was no one at reception to help us. Overall we had a great stay and would definitely want to stay here again and will be recommending it to all our friends and family. Thank you!

Lovely little hotel. A comfortable room. Good continental breakfast with plenty of choice. Friendly host. The hotel provides easy access to shops, restaurants and the ski lift. Reasonably priced and I recommend booking direct rather than through booking sites

AVOID due to Sloopy’s night club 20ft from your room in block A- ensure you are either in block B or C, or facing the valley in block A, otherwise forget it and don’t go - the noise from locals being thrown out of the nightclub is extreme between 2am and 5am only feet from many odalys apartment windows in block A. I thought from other reviews that this was just a late night bar - not true - it is a hard core club closing at 5am with extremely drunk and noisy locals spilling out into the street. Of course, we requested a quieter room when we booked and got placed in the noisiest possible one. Avoid block A at all costs, especially with a room facing the gondola. The night club doormen don’t seem to care about the noise impact, in other resorts this is swiftly dealt with by the gendermerie, somewhat frustrating considering that the police station is about 90 metres away. Why odalys does not have security staff to quieten down this problem I do not know as they will continue to lose customers, we will not return here despite an otherwise good stay - sort this out Odalys!
