Nice, Needs a Refresh

Here is what we liked about The Royal Hotel in Campbeltown: the central location across from the harbor, the pretty public spaces, the very comfortable bed, and the pleasant staff. Here's what could use improvement: the torn curtain in the bay window of our room, the cave-like dim lighting in both bedroom and bathroom, and the few electrical outlets with no USB charging ports. Our room was very large but the poor lighting made it difficult to navigate without all the curtains wide open. Updated room décor and brighter lighting would make a big difference. Breakfast was fine and all the staff were very nice. If the ambiance of the rooms matched the updated paint and furnishing of the public spaces, the Royal Hotel could be a standout in this lovely town.

Argyll Hotel

The Argyll Hotel sits on Bellochantuy bay, 10 miles north of Campbeltown on the beautiful Kintyre peninsula. It is a small hotel with eight bedrooms, most boasting sea views of the Atlantic across to the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha. The conservatory restaurant and lounge area give panoramic views of the ocean and islands too. A great place to chill and relax and of course to eat, with lunches and dinners served daily. Sit on our outdoor terrace and listen to the waves cascading onto the white sandy beach of the curved bay. The terrace leads directly onto the beach where you can walk off your dinner or build up your appetite before dinner. A great place too for children to play or to walk your dog. The hotel dates back to the late eighteenth century when it was built as a coaching inn and has remained as a hotel to this day. Modernised over the years, the hotel still retains the feel of an old west coast hotel with is cosy snug bar, but has the modern conveniences of en suite rooms with TV, free wi-fi access and an affordable restaurant meaning you do not have to leave the comfort of the hotel.

Excellent food with very friendly service in a restaurant with amazing views. Good quality food with no long wait and good service from the staff. Worth booking beforehand as it does get busy but if you’re near Campbeltown it’s well worth the effort

Perfect location for Campbeltown

A lovely little hotel about 20 minutes pleasant walk from Campbeltown. Great Scottish breakfast included. The main positive about this hotel though is the staff . They deserve a bonus. They could not do enough for us. The hotel is small and quaint but without the staff it would not have been the same great stay.

Excellent B & B

On a drab wet cold evening, we were ushered into the lounge where a log burner was burning bright. Hot drinks were available and the welcome was first class. Everything about the place, the rooms, the facilities and the breakfast were first class. By far the best B & B I have ever stayed in.

Okay - not the best.

Reviewed By MMG9631

Stayed for one night and hotel was okay. Staff were friendly but rooms were not as expected. Very old decor, bathroom was dirty and had bugs crawling around on the floor. Shower was broken and shower head kept falling down. Breakfast was average but the breakfast room felt more like a village hall and it was cold - was shivering whilst having breakfast. Not the best place to stay unless standards are raised.

First class dinner

We had an excellent fish meal at The Ardshiel on our last night in Kintyre. The staff were very efficient and friendly and the Whisky bar and adjacent restaurant are very well appointed. We had mussels, langoustines and haddock which were deliciously fresh and very well cooked. Our table was set beside an open fire which was very welcoming.

Friendly owners

The owners Tracey and Bruce made us feel very welcome as soon as we arrived. The hotel was clean, comfortable with spacious rooms. We were in Cambeltown to cycle the Caledonian Way and the Dellwood Hotel was located perfectly to start the trip. There was ample breakfast choice, home-cooked and plenty of it. The coastline, countryside, hospitality and brilliant weather made it a very relaxing weekend. We would definitely book the hotel again.

Excellent stay

Reviewed By Connector101666

We stayed here for two nights in July 21. Our host was clearly passionate about his community and had lots of helpful tips about where to go and see which was very useful as first time visitors. Our bedroom was huge with two comfortable single beds and an en suite. I thought it was a nice touch to have Arran Aromatic hand wash in the en suite. Plenty of storage, a large wardrobe, a large chest of drawers and unit between the beds. Plenty of plugs also. We had a beautiful view of the harbour. Breakfast was delicious, with a full cooked breakfast done to order and lovely coffee. We felt the B&B was well situated and it was nice to have a stroll back after eating dinner. My only criticism is a tiny one. I like a biscuit with my tea, but really I am being mega picky here. A great stay and we will happily return.

Staff Lovely, Hotel Dire

Reviewed By Chris C

As all other reviewers have mentioned, the staff at this place cannot be faulted. They are lovely. However, the building is in desperate need of renovation, doors which don't fit into frames, cracked and peeling windowsills, tired carpets and moldy bathrooms. Also the only place I've ever had chicken served with squirty cream as a starter
