An oasis of tranquility in Atlixco
Reviewed By Jere-DePaulPosada loa Alcatraces is a charming small hotel, an easy 10-minute walk from the zócalo. The rooms vary in size and are scattered throughout the property but all are beautifully decorated and each has a gas fireplace which keeps them nice and warm on chilly winter nights. The bathrooms are on the small side but there is plenty of hot water and complimentary toiletries are provided. The rooms and baths are spotlessly clean. We stayed in Room #1 which is the smallest room, but it had ample space, a queen-sized canopy bed, desk, and loveseat. We found it to be cozy and even a bit romantic. There was a covered terrace outside overlooking a beautiful fountain and courtyard, perfect for relaxing and visiting with our friends who were staying next door in Room #2, a larger room with a king-sized bed and a loft. The grounds are lovely with roaming peacocks (during the day), a large swimming pool area and a spa and exercise equipment are provided for the guests. Posada los Alcatraces also has an on-site bar and restaurant. The restaurant and bar are attractive and well-appointed and, while the menu is limited, all of the food was well-prepared and delicious. I especially recommend the chicken pipian. For those who are driving, the hotel has a large, secure parking area. All of the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. If you are planning to visit Atlixco and are looking for a delightful, quiet place to stay, Posada los Alcatraces is definitely your best choice.

Reviewed By RobertoMurphyAtlixco is well known for having a wide variety of restaurants. Unfortunately, many close after just a few months in service. Fortunately, Las Calandrias is one of the good restaurants that have not closed in a long time. They offer a varied buffet, both for breakfast and lunch, with an ample selection of dishes. They also have a service island where you can ask for specific dishes, such as eggs prepared in many ways, tacos, meat cuts, and so on. The price is competitive, and the atmosphere is welcoming. The restaurant is in what once was a "hacienda", and has lots of green areas, peacocks and swans. It also serves a a boutique hotel, ideal for a couple of days of full relax.

Right on the town square, you can stroll at night and enjoy the friendliness of families as they spend time together. The landscape of the square is amazingly well taken care of with lots of color during growing season. Many restaurants of differing ethnic foods all around the square. We prefer a room overlooking the square to take it all in. Staff is friendly and acommodating.

Our room was very nice but it was right next to the lobby so at some point it felt a bit invasive, but the room itself was beautiful and the bed so much confortable. The views are quite beautifully anywhere you look. One of the things I recommend the most is the restaurant out here, it has a majestic mural, the space is spacious, the chairs so confortable that made our evening so special. The food is really good to say the least, I think it is undervalued because it was so good and I could not believe I have not heard how good this is before. The “leche de tigre” (Peruvian ceviche) was surprisingly good, and I really mean it, sometimes it may be disappointing to try this food in small towns but let me tell you that it was a perfect balance of acidity, taste and size portion, simply delicious. The lamb we ordered was so tender and delicious that it it a total feast by itself. Finally the service and the restaurant could not be better. Diego was our waiter and he simply was the best, so knowledgeable when he explained the dishes and the mural that it just made the experience simply perfect. I came to celebrate my 18th anniversary of marriage with my wife and we couldn’t pick up a better place. And by the way did we mentioned the spa? Well it is a treat, the service was extraordinary, it was a couple’s therapy and it was just the cherry on the cake. I guess I fell in love one more time, with this place and specially with my wife. Simply magical. Well done Santo Cristo.

Great spot to have a breakfast
Reviewed By javiergv07Although this is a hotel, my visit was for breakfast in Sunday. It it located at the very center of Atlixco at the “zocalo”, the service is very good and the personnel so attentive. The quality is the food is very good, I strongly recommend the “natas” with Mexican pastries such as “conchas”. Everything in the menu worths the visit. The location is excellent since it is in front of the garden and the church. On weekends you can talk a walk to see the artisan work or the flowers that are on sale on the street.

Overpriced and overrated
Reviewed By frontera60While the rooms were large and clean, the hotel left a lot to be desired: no hand towels, no proper bath mat, no bottled water in our room (there were supposed to be 2 bottles) nor other drinking water option, no hangers in the closet. Service at the reception was terrible and breakfast was all but inedible (overdone fried eggs, cold, lukewarm and weak coffee). The pool is very small and cold. Plus, it is not located close to the center of town and walking there and back is not considered safe. Overall, a great overpriced disappointment!

Good but not the best
Reviewed By RobertoMurphyThis refers only to the restaurant. It is situated in a very nice corner of Atlixco, Puebla, away from the city bustle, and it makes for a very relaxing atmosphere. The food is very good, but the problem we encountered was that the waiters did not inform us some dishes were not available at the time they gave us the menu. It stands to reason that they should let you know right away what's not available. The same problem we had with the wine list. Furthermore, I ordered a Rib Eye, but what I got was a boot sole harder than my soul! Should have known better!

Luxurious and moderately priced.The Hotel La Esmeralda is 15 minutes from the city of Puebla. Atlixco enjoys from a privileged climate because it is located 400 meters below sea level compared to Puebla, and is near at the slopes of the Popocatepetl volcano (only 23 kilometers from the crater). Atlixco is also known as the place with the best climate in the world. The property has no hotel services , it is rented as a complete property for a single group a time.
Amazing service and room

Having worked for a large chain claiming to be the best in the business I can say that they fall short from La Esmeralda. Hilton Mclean should learn from the hospitality here and culinary especially the culinary here at La Esmeralda. 5 stars.
