To decide whether a hotel is well-managed or not, I perform a simple test: is there a name sign on the building or at least on the door? On this count already, Dakar International House fails: it is completely unmarked. The hostel has its own website with a booking engine. Sure enough I got an automated e-mail acknowledgement that my reservation request had been received and would be processed, i.e. accepted or declined. That was the end of all communication. Predictably, the reception had no record of my booking when I arrived. The receptionist did not even know that the hostel had its own booking website. Staff were hit-and-miss: all duty receptionists except one were lazy, clueless and passive; for any chores they tended to summon one of the security guards who were generally kind, understanding and helpful. I was shown my bed after one such security guard decided and announced that the bed selected was 'probably' (!) not occupied. Nobody bothered to provide fresh bedding. The dorm bathroom was a tiny one square meter cubicle. The washbasin was the size of a dinner plate. To reach the shower one had to climb over the toilet. Sitting on the toilet was impossible because the toilet bowl was as long as the bathroom was wide. The bathroom/toilet door was a flimsy metal affair and you could hear EVERYTHING that your fellow guests were doing inside. (Use your imagination.) The dorm was teeming with mosquitos. All beds had mosquito nets, but the upper bunk beds lacked anything to hang the nets from, so the nets were useless. WiFi worked not at all on my first day, and only intermittently thereafter. One of the first things a hostel security guard told me was never to leave 'anything' (not just 'any valuables') lying around in the dormitory. (Big lockers are provided.) None of my fellow sleepers looked like bona fide backpackers or travellers. A guy next to me appeared to be a West African bumster who was on his cellphone all night running his love scams. The reception had absolutely no local, travel-related knowledge or advice other than being able to point out the nearest bus stop. If you plan any activities in Dakar's city centre, the hostel’s location is terrible. Getting to the town centre or back by public transport takes about three hours each way, including waiting for the bus that has no fixed schedule and runs only every one or two hours. Since the closure of Dakar’s old international airport in Yoff they only reason for staying in the hostel neighbourhood (Grand Yoff) has disappeared. The only positive thing I can say is that the hostel is cheap: CFA 6000 for a dorm bed. How this dump came to be rated as 'Senegal’s best hostel' is beyond me. Not much competition may be one reason. Is there even a second hostel in the country? I also suspect the management changed and the hostel went downhill as a result. One indication would be that the hostel today looks nothing like the colourful, fresh photos on its website: the cafe/restaurant no longer exists (it is now a grocery shop), the male dorm is filthy and dilapidated with peeling paint, elsewhere plaster is crumbling and carpets are torn, and some of the services advertised (such as currency exchange) are no longer available.

Begue Pokai is a nice “family Hostel” located in Senegal, in the small fishing village of Kelle – Toubab Dialaw. We are 40 mins from the new Airport of B. Diagne. We offer both private rooms and beds in our dormitory, all at affordable prices. Begue Pokai is like a family with cousins and relatives flowing in and out. Our goal is to develop a sustainable model of tourism, respecting and promoting the environment and the culture, giving our guests the opportunity to explore and indulge in the colours, the tastes, the smells and the pace of the country’s Terranga, through a mutual exchange of knowledge. One way we achieve our goal of sustainable tourism is by reinvesting our revenues in our ecological projects. We offer free wif-fi; bio-breakfast; pick up from the airport; tailored trip around the “petite-cote” and a library of travellers. We speak Italian, English and French. We offer airport pick up service and tailored excursions organized for small groups
We had a wonderful stay at this heartwarming place in Toubab Dialaw! The place is awesome, quiet and clean and the dinners are delicious! Laura and her staff are really nice and make you feel at home all the time. They will also give you advice and suggestions about what to do and see. I definitely suggest it!

What a surprise! This little café produced limitless supplies of fresh oysters from the mangroves, a wonderful cold beer and probably the best fish I had in Senegal., served with coconut. Apparently they also make their own goat's cheese, though sadly unavailable when we visited, but still amazing food. Add to that a lovely welcome from the local village…who like their dancing……it was the perfect lunch stop.

We came to the hostel and was informed about the price. We accepted that. After taking shower, resting, unpacking our luggages we were informed to pay more money. The worker told us to pay or to leave. He was a bit aggressive and pushed me. We were scared to go out by 1-2 AM by night. The following day the owner confirmed bigger price and saw nothing wrong in the behaviour of her worker. I don't recommend this place.

Four hours drive from Dakar (40 000 FCFA) but then Sine salum at its best. Great hospitality (Aurelien, the french owner is sound), cheap for backpackers, easy for families, clean and well thought fpr groups. We stayed there for two days but could have stayed there forever! Place is quiet and locals (majority of christian serere) are genuinely nice. nature wise, plenty of birds colonies and water full of fishes. Aurelien can bring you fishing there. Ask him to go at dawn, it's worth it!

We spent 3 nights in this clean and nice bungalows directly at the long and empty beach, bungalow was equipped with small nice details, fan and mosquito net. Electricity availabl all day long (whitch is not the case everywhere in senegal). Max, the owner was really caring and a great cook with italian flavour. In addition, the bar at teh lobby offers a great choice of drinks. All in all a nice place to stay and to relax, readng a nice book and take a bah in the ocean.

When you go through the village this hotel is located, you will never expect to find something similar. It is quite close to the airport, --they can arrange you trasnportation there for 8 EUR. I arrived late in the evening --still sunlight though-- and there was nobody there. No walk-in high BAR. EUR 15, which I think is ridiculous considering the facilities this hotel has. Good sleep, clean, nice cozy rooms imiting African rounded huts, swimming pool, and an ok breakfast --not plentiful, but enough. Wi-fi in common opened air areas only, but that was ok, the premises are not huge, so you can easily access them from your hut. Good choice if you need to take a flight early in the morning.
