Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.

A friendly hostel, located in Ancud city in a traditional chilota house. It is the north gate of the magical Chiloe island full of traditions and unique mythology. We try to maintain a very home like feel in our Hostel and make the guests feel comfortable and welcome. We offer various tours and try to arrange the ones that we don´t offer.
We had a relaxing few days here and felt right at home. Great location, opposite the bus station which was really handy. This hostel is immaculately clean in the kitchens rooms and bathrooms. This has excellent kitchen facilities which was a breath of fresh air. The beds are really wide and comfortable. Would stay again! We came just after the Penguins had migrated unfortunately so the town was a lot quieter which did affect the atmosphere.

New concept of Hostel Boutique, with beautiful landscape to the sea. Comfortable rooms, all with private bathrooms, heating, TV, WIFI, telephone. Cozy familiar atmosphere, managed by the owner. Breakfast, common kitchen and tour recommendations. Close to downtown.
Our jaws dropped as we walked into our room. We had panoramic views of the sea and coastline from two enormous windows with two lovely modern chairs to watch the birds, the waves & dolphins. The building is a 5 star if it were maintained. Our room was spotless & beautifully decorated from crisp white linens to cream woven additions. However, the bathtub had been filled into make a shower that I know many people would not be able to climb up & into safely. We had record high temperatures & the room was warm. It also meant the doors to empty rooms were open and although smaller than our room, all were lovely with one big picture window on to the sea. There were 3 hot tubs on the deck below us with a missing safety rail & not accessible to guests - a shame. The biggest flaw is the breakfast. Coffee machine had old COLD coffee. There was instant on the table & hot water. “Fruit salad” was just inedible old & we suspected they blended leftovers for the “juice”. Meat & cheese on same plate so if you are a vegetarian - tough. 2 rolls each - no toast or eggs. They do provide warm milk, but sadly with some work on the breakfast this could be a much sought after hotel. They cater to groups that stop for one night. Parking available & signs all over Ancud make it easy to find. Little changes could make this Very popular with tourists and one of the better hotels in the region.

Palafito Hostel Chiloe opens its doors in 2008 being the first hostel in a palafitte on the island of Chiloé. We are located in the traditional palafitos neighborhood of gamboa, 15 minutes walk from the city center. We have 8 rooms of which 2 have a private balcony with a beautiful view, 3 with views of the nearby palafitos and 2 shared rooms. When you wake up you will enjoy a delicious breakfast with bread and homemade jam, grain coffee, fruit salad, good conversations in the best environment. Do not hesitate to ask for information about our activities! Open all year long!
This is a quirky place but how often do you get to stay in a Palafito on stilts with a top class restaurant above you. Don't expect luxury but don't expect hostel either, its a boutique hotel with bundles of charm. We really enjoyed it and from what we saw was a great choice for a few days on the island. We loved the views and great sitting outside just watching what was going on. They could have made more of the outside but suspect that was a compromise as a number of bedrooms overlook it. The rooms are like a ski chalet and rustic, bed was brilliants. YOU MUST go the restaurant on the top floor which separately owned. It is run by an experienced Santiago chef and his wife who has set this up using his experience of top hotels with his personal twist. They couldn't have been more friendly. The food was different and excellent as was the wine, if it was a restaurant in London we would definitely go back. I don't normally eat fish but their special Ceviche tempted me and I am glad I tried it. Enjoy

"Palafito Waiwen", located at the heart of Gamboa neighborhood in the city of Castro, Island of Chiloe. Here you can enjoy a unique experience of staying in one of the traditional houses on stilts above the calm waters of the bay of Castro near the Gamboa estuary with its particular Chilean southern warmth and surrounded by the exceptional beauty of its landscapes and people.
On a quieter street, just outside of the main part of Castro yet near a few shops and decent restaurants, this is a good choice if you're willing to walk/drive to the main sites. A 20-minute walk uphill to the church will get you to the centre of Castro, allowing 'Waiwen' to feel a bit more private. Breakfast is simple but nice; the setting is picturesque on a stilted "palafito" that Castro is known for; hosts are helpful (especially Juan!) and welcoming. A solid 4+ for 'Waiwen' I would recommend staying here.

What a quaint and authentic house this is! The big deck has a beautiful view of the fjord and is a great place to chill and have a drink and/or one of the homemade pizzas, or just sit and watch the tides change... Naddia and Henry, the lovely couple that own and run the palafito, treat you like family. Naddia gave lots of advice on what to do in Castro and took me on a guided tour to some of the villages and Unesco Heritage churches Chiloe is famous for. Although neither of them speak English, they were very patient with my limited Spanish, spoke slowly and made sure I understood. Henry suggested I take the bus to Cucao (on the Pacific coast) for some walking in the national park, which I did and that was a wonderful day out. Castro itself is very nice to wander around, look at the colourful palafitos and soak up the atmosphere, which is totally different from the rest of Chile. I also did a half hour boat tour on the fjord to see the palafitos from the other (stilt)side. If you like kayaking Henry can take you out on the fjord in one of his kayaks. The rooms are not luxury, but very clean and staying in this palafito with all the nooks and crannies is in my opinion the only way to experience the real Castro, and Naddia and Henry are the easiest friends to make!

I had a great stay in the hostel. Communication was excellent and I stayed in a shared room with 3 beds. All of the windows have a great view of the sea, the water was hot and the place is pretty close to down town also. The interiors were also nicely decorated.

Right on the seafront, every room has a great view of the bay of Ancud. Our newly built hostel is just a two minute walk from the main square. Hostel Mundo Nuevo has a large garden area, seaview terrace, a cosy living room, a very well equipped kitchen plus central heating.
Good location, free parking, excellent service, plentiful breakfast (cereal, juice, ham, cheese, good bread, fruit, coffee, tea). 10-mins walk from Cruz del Sur bus station down a steep hill to the sea and this b&b. Our large triple room was one of the best we’ve stayed in during our month in Chile. The guy on reception couldn’t have been more helpful or tremendously efficient. If paying with a credit card there is a 19pct tax payable; to avoid pay in cash. Regrettably the restaurant was only open for lunch Mon-Fri so we ate dinner down the road to the left at a small hotel/restaurant on the seafront,

The lodge was built with native wood, preserving the local construction style. Its unbeatable location allow to enjoy the spectacular view of Lake Cucao and its surroundings, full of flora and fauna. Palafito Cucao Lodge is open all year around, and has all the necessary equipment such as fully equipped kitchen, private bathrooms and hot water in all bedrooms. It also offers activities like kayak and bike rental, guided treks and horseback rides.
We had such a great stay here while we explored this part of the island - wonderful staff, fun fellow travelers, beautiful rooms and grounds. Couldn’t ask for more. We stayed here in January 2020 but TA won’t let me select that date so just adding that caveat here on actual travel date. Highly recommend!

A new option in Castro, made by and for backpackers! Just one block from the Main Square and near everything that you need.
The best place to stay in Salinas de Guaranda. Lennon is a great host and gave us advice on what activities to do. Rooms were nice and comfortable. A great place to get an authentic Ecuadorian experience.

Very nice hostal. The room was comfortable, the breakfast was decent, and the staff was friendly. The decor is a little outdated, but the rooms are clean and well organized with plenty of space. If you have a room at the front, be prepared for lots of noise. The hostal is across from an artisan market, so you hear all the cars and trucks unloading in the morning. On the plus side, the coastline is also just across the street, although the view from the room was disappointing. But overall, it is a good location with easy access to the center of the town.
