Although tiny our room was comfortable and warm. There were two lockers and a TV. Bathroom facilites were shared. The facilities were clean and noise wasn't a problem. Parking was nearby in a Wilson Parking area and was free with a voucher from reception. We had no window so I recommend if you have a vehicle get a room overlooking the parking area for security. The central location was ideal for exploring the city on foot. Regent street is at the back and has some excellent bars and eateries.

These rooms are popular with families and groups who want to be close together and are further complemented with hammocks, picnic tables, a large grassy space, and BBQ area. The Lodge offers warm, lodge-style accommodation designed with a range of shared and self-contained options. Ideal for group bookings, from schools and colleges to sporting and cultural groups.
No one told me about the $100 bond they take when you check in. Too noisy, I could hear everything from the rooms next to mine and above. Had to run water for 8 minutes to get hot water in the shower and even that wasn’t hot enough. Reception hours were “7am-11pm” but I had to wait 15 minutes one morning for someone to turn up (not great when you booked a taxi and lost it because of that). Must say place was really clean, the kitchen was spacious and spotless.

Welcome to Chester Street. We are a small 15 person hostel set up for the true independent traveler in a lovely old colorful kiwi villa. No bus groups here! Less than 10 minutes walk from Cathedral Square along the tree lined Avon River. Budget sleeper vans & cars also available.
Chester St Backpackers is amazing. The fact that I worked and lived there for nearly half a year says a lot about this place. The house looks really bright with it's intense colours and you don't actually feel like you are staying in a hostel because it's in a quiet neighbourhood and close to the city centre. The rooms are small but nice and the fact it's only two beds in it gives you more of a feeling being able to have some privacy. The house has a lemon tree and you can make really yummy juice out of it. Karen and Antony treated me fairly and were quite flexible with my working hours or taking an extra day off. Antony also helped me a lot with my car (and it wasn't even from his business) and made it pass the wof. All in all I can say that Chester St Backpackers was one of the best times I had in NZ and I will never forget it. Thank you to Karen & Antony who gave me the opportunity to work there.

My friend and I stayed here for one night following a hiking trip so needless to say we were both very tired- this hostel was just what we needed! It was very homely and clean with a friendly owner, the other tenants also seemed very respectful. We both had a great night sleep and enjoyed sitting in the back garden to eat our breakfast before we set off the next day. A lovely little hostel in the centre of the city, would definitely stay again!
