The 10 Best Historical & Heritage Tours in Mauritius, Mauritius

July 7, 2021 Stefan Strunk

Mauritius is arguably Africa’s wealthiest destination, a tropical paradise with tons to do. Port Louis, the modern capital of this 38-mile by 29-mile island, is a bustling port with a revitalized waterfront and a busy market. But most visitors gravitate toward resort areas such as Mont Choisy, quiet Trou-aux-Biches and the more bustling Flic en Flac, popular with scuba divers. Rivière Noire is ideal for those looking for great deep-sea fishing.

This company were organised the transfers on arrival to Mauritius to our hotel resort. It was the most uncomfortable and sub standard transfer we have ever experienced. After a twelve hour flight from the UK we were packed to capacity in a small, old vehicle with no proper air conditioning, small uncomfortable seats and luggage separated only by an old net at the rear of the vehicle. We were then subjected to 45 plus minutes of poor driving in the most uncomfortable vehicle which in the UK would have been compared only to a builder's van. We complained to the rep on arrival at the resort and said we would not be prepared to make the return journey in the same circumstances. When I asked about an upgrade to private transfer I was given a price of 2,000 rupees, this was the same price as the taxi from the hotel. This was not an acceptable price given that we had already paid for a transfer and as we were not able to negotiate anything else with Mautorco, we booked a taxi. Extremely poor service and for that reason we did not even look at trips with this company. Certainly would not recommend.

I would have given this a 5 star rating just for the trip experience, but I unfortunately experienced sexist and rude comments from the staff there. Maybe it was because I am a mauritian and not a foreigner. According to the quad biking staff, women do not know how to drive. "Si ena ene ti garson devant ou, ou koner ou krk, mais si ena ene tifi devant, li kav zis arete ene kout ek lerla ou kav taper, paski banla pa koner zot" - these are the words of one particular staff. Instructions are also rushed, and if you missed something, they tell you that you were not listening. It's such a great activity, so it's a shame that some of us had to face these comments.

We will first visit Port Louis, taste its delicious street food, meet those that prepare it, and learn the history of the capital city of Mauritius. We will then enter the gates of China Town and feel like we're somewhere else. We will enjoy all the Mauritian street food classics like dholl puris or "boulettes", then we will also relish on some Chinese specialties with a Mauritian twist. We will also learn of the struggles of this neighbourhood and how it has managed to transform itself to become a hotspot of Chinese heritage, street art and delicious food. Le Morne Brabant is a mountain of the south-west of Mauritius, on the peninsula of le Morne. Our team has been guiding guests from all over the planet on this majestic rock for the past twelve years. Declared World Heritage by UNESCO since July 6, 2008, the site is a sanctuary of the runaway slaves who would have committed suicide by jumping off the cliff of the mountain. Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It is habitat to a very large variety of endemic and narrow-endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutoniana, which is our floral emblem. Some steeper parts of the ascent will require the use of our hands to progress safely towards the top, where we’ll discover the breath-taking views on the west and south-west lagoons and part of of the island !

The guide new so much about the birds, about the type of trees of the area. It was not just a hike with a wonderful view but we also found more about Mauritius nature, culture and heritage.
