The largest of Italy’s fresh-water lakes, Lake Garda is located in northeast Italy. Tourists traveling here will find plenty of excursions and activities to keep them entertained year-round—everything from visiting hilly wine regions to exploring 14th-century castles. The towns and communities surrounding Lake Garda offer easy day trips from Venice, easily accessible by car or train. Major sights include the towns of Sirmione (which attracts most Lake Garda visitors thanks to its historic Rocca Scaligiera castle) and Riva del Garda (for the Varone waterfalls located nearby), as well as the region’s hills, which offer numerous hiking trails for adventurous walkers.

The ride up to the fort on Monte Brione offers a good 20-30min ride with some decent elevation change, and when you reach the fort, you can enjoy a break-taking view of Lake Garda above Torbole-Riva (Monte Brione divides the two towns). A bit further along the asphalt road, on the left you will find the MTB path sentiero 770 which is a single-track on medium difficulty for DH riding, total length of the ride about 3'. We are frequently in Riva for pleasure, and this bike trip on Monte Brione is very good for a 40' training session on the MTB with some downhill bits.

At the time of Pliny, during the Roman Empire, Peschiera was called Arilica and had already a considerable importance. Later, in the next centuries, it was fortified by the Scaligeri, by Venice, Austria and Italy. The walls were designed by famous architects: a good part of it is the work of Sanmicheli. Today you can find shops, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours inside the pentagon shaped fortress where the city centre is located. Along the lakeside there are many facilities for water sports like; sailing, motor boat rentals, sup and more. Peschiera del Garda has around forty cozy hotels and a dozen of the biggest and best equipped campsites of the lake. In the surrounding area there are both natural parks as amusement parks among the best known in Europe. Thanks to the lake we have a fertile countryside and a very fine wine area, which in the past attracted kings, merchants and cardinals, our first ‘tourists’!
We are here to provide so well needed rest and relaxation during mini tour via train visiting Venice and Verona. Peschiera is very easy to get to (on the main train route between Milan and Venice). Ancient part of the town is very pretty with lots of history. If staying in the height of summer I would recommend rising early and doing the self guided tour (using map/info available online) before breakfast (very leisurely 2 hours needed). The streets are almost deserted apart for locals getting ready for their day, determined cyclists and the odd runner. Plus the early light gives some great photo opportunities. You can also do the tour with audio equipment from the tourist information office (but this is not open that early of course). Would echo the other reviews that there are plenty of good bars, restaurants etc available and very easy to take the ferry or bus to visit other towns on the lake. What not to love?

We had no expectations about Sirmione, lake Garda was the beauty we've expected to see and meet, but Sirmione ended up to be one of the most beautiful places we've visited this spring on our Northern Italy trip! Warm, peaceful, green, clean, flowery, with beautiful small stores and restaurants, narrow streets full of flowers and nice people... and stunning lake Garda surrounding it from all of it's sides. Truly beautiful and breathtaking! Perfect place for holidays, vacation and finding peace inside of yourself... even for summer vacation, you have beautiful places for swimming... amazing. Truly.

It was a very long hike to the top , but the view was amazing. The history of the village is so interesting. We spend many hours wandering and reading about the historical history.
