Bratislava City Walls

Reviewed By paullegate - St Ives, United Kingdom

Bratislava is a city that was heavily fortified and during the 14th century there were three gates that led into the city, Michael’s Gate, Vydrica and Laurinc and later in 15th century Fisherman’s Gate was built. Of all of the gates only Michael’s Gate and the city walls along Staromestská street as well as a few original structures are the only fortifications that currently exist to this day. The city walls along Staromestská street were uncovered during the construction of the SNP bridge in 1970’s and during 1980’s and 90’s the walls were completely renovated. We spent time walking around the walls and fortifications and it can be seen how much effort has been made to restore the fortifications of Bratislava’s past, a truly important area of the city that must be seen on any visit to Bratislava to appreciate the history of the stunning city.
