This stunning Venetian fortress sets the tone for your visit to the island. It is really the first thing you notice as you approach by boat and is excellent. So much history through the Ottoman empire, Turkish and Greek influences all make this a remarkable structure. Don’t forget your water and camera as you will get lots of great photos around this area.

If you are visiting Crete, do not miss Spinaloga! It holds centuries of history on a small island - from first antic inhabitants, Venetians building fortifications, to Otoman inhabitants and the leper colony, Spinalonga bursts from different and moving stories. It's easy to get there, taking a bus from Agios Nikolaos to Plaka, which both ways is less than 6 eur. Then, at Plaka, you take a boat to the island, which is 10 eur both ways. Entrance thicket to the island is 8 eur. And when you're there - learn, explore, enjoy! We went early, we were at the island before 10 am, so it was peaceful and almost empty. We went alone, without a guide and a group, since we wanted the freedom to wonder around and explore by ourselves, but guides have so many interesting stories that it might worth going with a group. An hour is just enough for a tour around the island, there are some tables with stories and facts about Spinalonga around, and book guides inside the suvenir shop, so that can be helpful if going on your own. Also, tv series The Island, based on the book, can be a good help in understanding how people lived there, in the former leper colony. Experience is absolutely amazing.

An ancient town dating back over 3,500 years, excavated and restored to show visitors how common people lived in ancient Greece.
What an incredible feeling it is to stand amongst, and wander around, remains of buildings constructed by the amazing Minoan culture 4000-5000 years ago. This is a site that all visitors to Crete must make the effort to visit. It is an incredible archaeological achievement, and is surprisingly inexpensive to visit.

Situated about 3km north of Vai Beach, this amazing archaeological site was first inhabited by the Minoans sometime before 4,000 years ago. The ancient ruins overlook the Itanos Beach and what was once a huge harbor that carried the Minoan influence to Asia Minor and Egypt. When you visit, you'll get the impression that something amazing too place here once. I could sense the way the town must have been back then, bustling with craftsmen, sailors, officials, moms and dads walking with their children, and so forth. Such places have an ethereal effect, which seemed strong here. This is a must see if you are into history and culture, while you visit three of Crete's best beaches nearby.
