King Yin Lei

Reviewed By Leonhkny - Hong Kong, China

King Yin Lei is one of the few remaining Cantonese stately mansions in Hong Kong. Once the residence of a wealthy Chinese family, it is now a restored museum. The opulent interior is a synthesis of traditional southern Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is only open during weekends in June-August and October-December. Tickets have to be collected in advance. The bus to the Peak stops at the entrance.

Historic Structures Of The Tai Tam Reservoirs

Reviewed By Mairwen1

Between 1888 and 1917 a massive program of reservoir and dam building at Tai Tam took place. An excellent hiking track, the Waterworks Heritage Trail, has gathered all the historic relics from this time together and created a path that takes you through the Tai Tam valley and past the reservoirs. It leads across the aqueducts and old stone bridges and takes in other features such as the valve houses, pumping stations and workmen’s quarters. Altogether there are 22 heritage monuments or graded buildings included on the 5 km walk. Detailed information boards are posted along the route, describing the history of these early constructions. The scale of the dams is striking but even more striking is that fact that they were built over 100 years ago, at a time when most of the work would have been completed using only manpower and relatively basic equipment. It would have been gruelling work in punishing conditions. Ongoing research has recently uncovered even more landmarks including brick caissons, remnants of a pier. Most intriguingly, a sunken Hakka village has lain beneath the dam waters for over 100 years. Diving teams have been recovering relics, including mud bricks, banyan trees, century-old soda water bottles and small opium containers. Make sure you take plenty of water as you can’t buy it inside the country park. Sunscreen and a hat are essentials. GETTING THERE: The trail begins at the entry gates to the country park, just past the Parkview residential complex. As you approach, you will notice signs for the Wilson Trail and other tracks but keep going past these until you get to the black and white gates for the park, where you will see signs for the Tai Tam Country Park and the Heritage Trail. From Central, a taxi will cost about $75HKD and will take about 15 min. Or you can get the #6 Stanley Market bus and get off on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road beside the petrol station (just past the tennis courts and cricket club). From here, you’ll still have to walk about 15 min uphill, up Tai Tam Reservoir Rd to Parkview and the country park.

...for anyone with an interest in HK during the war. This battery’s condition, location and history make it one of the most interesting of all the old military installations I have visited here. Also the walk is quite fun, both up and down, as it differed completely from the paved path off of which it branches.

This place is a must visit when you are in Hong Kong. It caters to a less touristy crowed and features many artistic & fashionable boutiques. Here you can find a range of tasteful clothing, handmade jewelry, modern art, & a variety of home decor. This is a great place to buy tasteful souvenirs. PMQ is walkable from Hollywood Road & is easily accessible. This building has two major buildings connected by the ground level & a 4th floor park. You can spend hours here wandering through all the various boutiques. We ended up purchasing beautiful handmade trays, candles, framed art & glassware for our home. If you need a mid-day drink, they also have a sake shop with sake tastings offered! In addition to that, they have restaurants located on the ground & basement floor. They also have numerous bakeries and coffee shops throughout PMQ

Shopping is mainly roadside stalls selling knick-knacks When you have reached the top of the steps, you can then turn right and walk down the overhead walkway which actually is next to the famous Escalators. Ohel Leah Synagogue

Reviewed By Gershon666 - Honolulu, United States

This Synagogue is at the center of Jewish religious and social life in Hong Kong. It will take some effort to get there by public transportation: bus and uphill walking. The Jewish community comprises more than 200 families. Most of the Jews are Ashkenazi from Russia and Eastern Europe. The building contains a treasured collection of Torah scrolls including some that date back to the mid-19th century. After going through some intense security you are welcomed into an atmosphere of intimacy, warmth and spirituality. A Jewish community centre includes a Jewish day school, a kosher supermarket and meat and dairy restaurants. I enjoyed walking around the property, meeting some of the teachers and schoolchildren and a rabbinical scholar. He provided some interesting insights into Jewish life in Hong Kong. But, the highlight of my time was sitting in the sanctuary and feeling the threads of history while giving homage to my ancestors. After all the magnificent sights and experiences of Hong Kong, this was a special treat.
