40km hiking trail round Baden-Baden

We did this hike in October, and with the leaves starting to turn the forest was stunningly beautiful. We were prepared for rainy weather, given the time of year (not ideal - we were planning around a work conference so not much flexibility with dates), but were very lucky and had spectacular weather! As well as forest, the hike takes you through villages, farmyards, orchards and fields, all while the birds are chirping and you may hear the chime of churchbells in the distance. The hike itself involves some ascending, but is not at all difficult, with the track easy to walk on. Our only difficulty was that the signs did not match the map we had for part of stage 1, and in fact the signage seemed to indicate we should walk through the Neues schloss, which was closed - we followed the map from there and did not have any troubles; I would therefore suggest that a map is a necessity, and perhaps stopping at the tourist office beforehand so your map is up-to-date would be a worthwhile use of time. We did stages 1-3 on day 1, overnighting in Geroldsau, and completed stages 4-5 on day 2, walking to and from Bernharduskirche from the centre of Baden Baden at either end of the hike, but you can do as many stages as you like, starting at any point, as there is bus transport to all stages.

The information we found was very confusing and we weren't sure if it's a good idea for our group (ages 5 to 80). We started at Schattenmühle, an entry with information sign. There are endless paths you can take different lengths and difficulty. It is possible to start with one and continue to another. There is a bus that goes through the parking zones along the gorge so you can enjoy the hike and then take the bus back. We were planning on doing path number 5, which is an eight km circular one, from Schattenmühle to Lotenbachklamm then to Boll, Tiefentall and back. However, we started at the opposite direction and after 1.4 km we got to the next parking. Since we were a big group with snow walkers we decided to take the bus to Boll (skip about 3km of hiking) and continue from there to ehem. Bad Boll, and back to Schattenmühle. It was great decision. We hiked for 5 km all together, and it took us about 5 hours, coinciding the 5 and 80 years old, the stops we did at the river, we were happy. The path can be slippery but usually not to difficult to pass. The parts we did were mostly on the shade so it wasn't too hot, and there are real gems alone the way. Bring enough water!

The stop at the Hofgut Sternen hotel and shop complex was part of our Viking Rhine River cruise excursion our last afternoon before our final destination of Basel. We chose the guided hike up the trail with an audio tour by the guide rather than other activities in the tourist complex. A short way up the trail we were turned loose on our own to return to the shops or continue up the trail as far as we wanted. My wife and I, along with several other couples chose to keep hiking. Our goal was to make it to the observation area the guide mentioned, but that proved to be impossible given our time constraints. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful hike along the river in almost a haunting forest atmosphere, climbing stairs and crossing several bridges. We hike regularly, but are in our late 50's, and we considered it easy, although a bit slippery because of the drizzle that day. Perhaps someday we can return and hike all the way to the top.
