St. Maria de Victoria Kirche

Reviewed By Asta365 - Kent, United States

The church of Maria de Victoria, also known as the Asam Kirche, is a stunning baroque church. Expecting a church more like the Asam Kirche in Munich which focuses more on these artisans' Baroque plasterwork, I was surprised to find a study in perspective in this medium size church. Confronted with a set of design challenges in what is basically a rectangular church, the brothers worked out a set of multiple perspective points that makes a celestial vision absolutely pop out at the viewer. This is coupled with clever plasterwork along the edges of the ceiling which integrate it with the walls to smoothly transition their work into the plain walls. The altar is a nice baroque composition, but the "professors" seating along the walls of this Jesuit church are extremely well crafted. In the the small treasury in the back of the church there is a magnificent monstrance made in Augsburg that commemorates the Battle of Leponto. While such a warlike scene that is somewhat jarring when seen on such a religious article, I guess it's understandable after such a significant turning point in the then-ongoing war against Islamic expansion. In a somewhat similar vein, the warrior-leader Tilly's crucifix in silver and ivory is also kept in the treasury. Admission is €3. I was allowed to use the English language guidebook to guide my visit. There really is no parking close to the church, but it is a short walk from the large public parking lots. The docents at the church were friendly.

Thousands of charming cats give an overview of the cat's history in everyday life and in art. Come and spend an unforgettable afternoon in the realm of our beloved velvet paws. The current opening hours can be found on our homepage. It is also possible to visit the cat museum on other days by appointment with phone or e-mail. Here are a few remarks to prevent misunderstandings: Sorry, the available rooms are not accessible to disabled guests. There are several steps to cope with and the walkways are cramped. Therefore it is unfortunately not possible to visit the exhibition with a baby carriage too. And please do not bring any other animals into the exhibition with regard to the siamese ball lightning of the house. Thank you for your understanding ♥

Only on Sat and Sunday the bus goes from Treis Karten. You’ll need a full day. Train from Cochem before 10. 15 to Treis Karten Station. Turn left from the Railway Station, there is the bus stop. The Burg Eltz bus leaves at 11.15. The bus winds its way through villages for 1/2 hour ( at least) and finally you get to the parking area for Burg Eltz. Turn right and follow the track through the forest for 20 minutes. The walk isn’t that difficult and is very attractive. Take photos when you see the castle! We didn’t have time to fit in the tour that you have to take to see the castle. ..But, you could if you wanted to fill in the time until the return bus at 13.10. ... unfortunately, we were on a tight schedule and chose to walk down to Moselkern. It was a pleasant 4.9 km down hill walk. It took us one hour, ten minutes. . We waited for the hourly, 3pm train back to Cochem. As I’m older, I’m glad I took a walking pole. At some parts the track was uneven and the pole gave me support. I wouldn’t walk the track if it was damp. It could be dangerous. A taxi from Moselkern cost E45 one way.

This is a small church in Munich in the old town area very close to the Marienplatz. This is the Church of St. Johann Nepomuk, also known as the Asam brothers church. This is an amazingly beautiful and full of details built in a Baroque style by two brothers. The two Asam brothers who were sculptor and painter built this beautiful church as a showcase of their talent. They lived there and met with their clients over there. This is simply a breathtaking and magnificent monument with lots of great artful details. Bravo Asam brothers. It is a must see in Munich.

Old Town

This walled village houses mercantile buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The fortified wall has sixteen towers; you can access the city from four of them.

Drove the Romantic Road in August. This was one of our favourite villages of the trip. Straight out of a Grimm's Fairy Tale. Cobblestone streets, friendly folks and a very peaceful atmosphere. The houses and businesses are rendered in late Renaissance facades with pastel colours and half-timbered frames. So photographic and charming. We parked on the outer ring and walked into the town through one of the four medieval gates that remain . This town has a history! Probably starting around the 8th century. It was once a "Free Imperial City" of the Holy Roman Empire. In the 13th century the fortifications began. Luckily this town is original, untouched by WWI or WWII bombings. Forward thinking in the 19th century, by Ludwig I proclaimed the city to be a heritage site to be preserved and protected. Delightful shops, bakeries, cafes, inns, restaurants and churches. Well worth an afternoon of roaming around. Highly recommend saving time to walk the fortification walls or at the least climb the St. George church tower. Delightful!

Panometer Dresden

Since 2006 the Panometer Dresden, a former gas tank in Dresden Reick, displays the monumental 360° panoramas “BAROQUE DRESDEN” and “DRESDEN 1945” created by Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi in a regular change. The presentation of the pictures on a scale of 1:1 and a 105 m wide and 27 m high surface is supported by the use of light and sound. Standing on the 15 m high platform in the middle of the monumental picture the visitor can thus experience the perfect illusion of immerging into the history of Saxony’s capital Dresden. Between January and May/June the panorama “DRESDEN 1945” broaches the issues of tragedy and hope of the European city. The accompanying exhibition provides an introduction into the immediate aftermath of the bombing raids on February 13th in 1945. Inside of the panorama picture, which is supported by light and sound effects, the incidents of this day get then even more realistic for the visitors and they get the feeling of being directly involved in the happening. The following documentary, showing interviews with contemporary witnesses, depicts Dresden’s reconstruction in the centuries after the bombing. Between June and December “BAROQUE DRESDEN” invites its visitors to a travel in time into the epoch of Baroque, Dresden’s most famous era. Inspired by the numerous vedutas of Bernardo Bellotto, also known as Canaletto, Yadegar Asisi depicts a unique overall view of Saxony’s capital city. Detailed sceneries of the city life and the courtly routine during the Augustan Epoch, dated back to 1695 - 1760, allow the visitors to plunge into the baroque heyday. The accompanying exhibition, held in vibrant colours such as magenta, deep blue and gold, concentrates on the baroque city’s daily life. Numerous exhibits illustrate different aspects of absolutism, court and religion of this time.

This museum is dedicated to the bombing of Dresden in WWII and a plea that war will cease around the globe. First you walk through Dresden as it was preWWII, then you are in a room that surrounds you with bombs, darkness, noise, and a 360 degree view of Dresden following Allied bombing. Everything was pretty much flat. Then visitors enter a room which highlights wars of the last half of the 20th century, demonstrating that warring madness never ceases and it impacts human lives on a personal, as well as societal, scale. Wow! We spent two hours and could easily have spent more time. There is a similar Panometer in Wittenberg dedicated to exploring the life and times of Martin Luther, which will be a destination during our next trip to Germany, after the pandemic when tourism resumes.
