Many of the small towns in Texas that are county seats have beautiful historic courthouses located on a town square. The 1890 Hill County Courthouse in Hill County (30 minutes north of Waco just off I-35) is one of them. Surrounding this courthouse are numerous buildings that were built in the 1890's, now serving as stores and restaurants.

Wow! What a beautiful architecture of this courthouse. Not only is the courthouse beautiful but the plaza adjacent to the courthouse and the restored businesses around the plaza make this a must see when in Sulphur Springs. Don't miss the glass restrooms on the plaza...quite an experience.

We walked through the library with some locals and were really impressed. The interior has unique architecture, the outside areas offer very nice views of the downtown area and even the inside areas offer nice views as well. We’d suggest walking all of the way up and down and outside to explore all floors. It’s a very inviting space that would be hard to leave with a good book or if we were staying to study. The meeting rooms are a nice bonus and the technology petting zoo is interesting for all visitors. There seem to be quite a few events going on. Kudos to the person who thought to advertise a CD from a local group and also point out where they can be seen/heard live in town.

If it's in Texas, it must be bigger and better. That is the motto that architects followed with the Capitol Building in Austin. At one time, it was the tallest capitol building in the nation. Others might be taller now, but this is still a beautiful building that shows off many of the natural resources which are so prevalent in Texas, such as limestone and the landscapes.
A must even if you have little time. Lots of history, recommend you take a tour it’s free if you stop in or with tour company ( shortened version) just to learn some of facts that make it special!

If you are there on a weekday, go inside to look up towards the top of the dome, see the small museum inside, and look at the courthouse replica made with matches. While there are many beautiful Texas courthouses, this one is one of the most impressive in terms of size and details.

This was an awesome and informative self guided museum and tour. Despite being self guided, there were docents available to answer questions who were very friendly and helpful. As a “heads up” you can’t bring your cell phone or camera on the tour and it requires a tram ride from the visitors center to the tour location.

This 1894 courthouse ranks up there with some of the other beautiful county courthouses build in Texas. In fact, this one in Goliad was designed by the same person as the Caldwell courthouse in Lockhart (both are beautiful). We brought our bikes to go on the Angel of Goliad Hike and Bike Trail because the trailhead is just 2 short blocks to the south. This is a perfect starting point because you can also see the courthouse and the beautiful historic town square that surrounds the courthouse.
