Pienza, a town in Tuscany, is the "touchstone of Renaissance urbanism." In 1996, UNESCO declared the town a World Heritage Site and in 2004 the entire valley, the Val d'Orcia, was included on the list of Unesco’s World Cultural Landscapes. Pienza was the birthplace of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, who would become Pope Pius II. After he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town that would serve as a retreat from Rome.

Constant Companion and I visited Azienda Agriogola Fattoria Pianporcino as part of a culinary tour. It is the only agricultural company that breeds its sheep, makes and ages its cheeses, and sells directly to the customer. This results in cheeses with superb taste and very little carbon footprint. Arguably, these are the finest Pecorinos in Tuscany! We were treated to a thorough explanation of the cheese making process by the owner, Guiseppe, who was informative and humorous while speaking excellent English. Afterward, he led us to a large hall where we sampled twelve of his different cheeses ranging from the very young to those well aged along with samples of local Tuscan dried meats, local wine, and some of the best ricotta(he just made it) which we have ever eaten! We left delighted and so very thankful for this experience. Wish we could get this farm's products in the States!!

This is the one and only traditional shop in Pienza, the place where you can feed your eyes before you satisfy your palate. The shop offers a variety of aged cheese that go beyond your usual mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, mouthwatering charcuterie meat which can be paired with richly layered and full bodied fine wines. I bought here the best high quality traditional oil notorious for its healthy properties, vinegar and homemade pasta. Furthermore, the shop is located in the center of the town close to the Cathedral. I definitely highly recommend it.

Absolutely beautiful linens at great prices compared to other Tuscan towns. I love to get a few kitchen towels every time I travel as a sort of "memory" and these are fantastic quality, absolutely beautiful and so so soft!
