The Luvaria Ulisses was not ordinary shop for all kinds of reasons. First, it was tiny, having the capacity for one, or maybe two folks in it at a time. Then, it was beautiful, all adorned with red and gold ornamental design. And three, the gloves were stunning. My sister was taken care of by the proprietor, who placed her elbow on a round padded pillow, made especially for the elbows of glove-tryer-oners. Then the saleswoman looked at my sister's hand and could immediately tell what size she was. Impressive. A box was taken out of this long narrow hallway that went back into the shop. George pointed out that it reminded him very much of Olivander’s wand shop in Happy Potter. So true! So the gloves were extracted and then “opened” by the lady with this tool that looked like a large wooden tweezer thing. She stuck it in every finger of the glove and popped them open. And then finally, the glove was placed on the waiting hand. And they fit, well, like a glove. Finally the newly purchased gloves were placed in a satiny bag, which was then placed in a fancy shopping bag, and then given to my sister. All of this was fascinating and very very fun to watch. Loved this shop, even though I wasn't the purchaser!

I'm so thrilled I walked by and discovered this shop! I instantly fell in love with the exceptional quality, beauty, and craftsmanship of the products. All of the items are made in Portugal of high-quality wool, and the weaves, styles, and colors are striking and unique. The salesman was so helpful and patient, going around the store finding items in my size and in every possible color so that I could select what I loved most. I bought a beautiful, chic coat and scarf, then came back two days later to buy a throw blanket. I absolutely love my purchases.

Deja Lu is a bookshop that sells books that have already been read. One might call them second hand books, but it’s not the same. After all, these are books that have kept someone company. Now they'll be resold for a cause, as 100% of the sales will benefit the Portuguese Down Syndrome Association.
Any avid reader or library or bookstore lover will immediately feel at home in this gem of a book shop, as was I. The selection and organization in this oasis are wonderful. The fact that it’s a not for profit business run by volunteers for the pure benefit of a worthy cause warmed my heart.

This store is olive oil amazing, and we loved it! Located a few minutes walk from the Cathedral, Olistori specializes in Portuguese olive oil and other olive products. The owner operators are happy to educate you about Portuguese olive oil, and their enthusiasm is infectious. There’s lots of different olive oils and related products for sale, and we thought many would make unique gifts to take back home. (Also, if you’re into the idea of local foods as gifts to take back home, there’s another store nearby which offers a great selection of jellies, jams, and other Portuguese food products.)
