Excellent service from the moment of pick-up at our hotel, to returning the BMW F850GS after 5 days of riding. D gave us a detailed ride itinerary, plus everything dotted out on the GPS for each day. Selected roads and excellent accommodations, plus a private safari tour to Kruger National Park. The temperature was warm so we modified our schedule to ride only during the early mornings, but there were never any problems with the hotels because of our premature arrival. Due to the limited number of days we had accessible, we are surely coming back to discover more of this wonderful country. Maybe during a cooler time of the year..

The excellent level of professionalism and quality of service and product that we received from Stuart and his team is highly commendable. We hired a fully kitted out new Jimny 1.5 and we had the most incredible 5 days away. The Jimny arrived on time, Covid compliant cleaned and every item promised was neatly packed. This set up is compact and durable. It’s like a Swiss Army knife on wheels. We had rain, high winds, heavily graded 4 x 4 routes - the Jimny and her camping kit handled it all like a boss. We are planning our next trip with Treadlite 4 x 4 for a mid year winter break. Thanks for an awesome experience and we salute your excellent service.

Bushlore Africa

Reviewed By marcelh654

About Bushlore: Very reliable, knowledgeable, professional and friendly. Good communication leading up to trip, thorough explanation of the use of the vehicle and the gear, knowledgeable and friendly personnel who are mostly avid bush campers themselves. They picked us up at our hotel in Cape Town and dropped us off at the airport in Joburg. Our vehicle was in great shape; the engine never gave any problems in about 5000 km (48k to 53k), and it was well maintained. Bushlore may not be the least expensive rental company, but they came highly recommended by someone I respect, and we would definitely rent from them again. We want a reliable vehicle with a company that you can trust in case something goes wrong in a remote area! About the vehicle: We rented a Toyota land cruiser (4 doors, pickup style, with 1 roof tent). The vehicle is very reliable, and very capable on two tracks, especially on rougher tracks. However, this is not a race car... it is notably slow going uphill on highways, and you will down shift and have to be careful with passing... the vehicle requires distance and time for passing. The turning radius is rather large, but this was never a real problem in the field. We love the diesel landcruiser for what it is… it will get you where you want to go in rough terrain and the diesel engine is a pleasure to drive at low speeds. It is a specialized vehicle for off-pavement driving. However, if you are looking for speedy travel on paved roads, choose another vehicle type… but you will likely compromise on the off-pavement performance. With our type of travel, the places we want to go, we would choose the landcruiser again. Equipment: We had a roof top tent. I think this is a “must-have” if you are camping in areas without an electrified wildlife fence. However, in our case we always camped inside the national parks in South Africa, and whenever there were large carnivores present, the campgrounds were always fenced. We mostly used our own ground tent for several reasons: 1. The camp grounds we stayed at were usually fenced, 2. It is quicker to set up and break down a normal tent than a roof top tent (at least the one model we had), 3. Whenever we would stay for more than 1 night at a location, we were on our way quicker at sunrise using a ground tent… we didn’t have to pack the roof top tent… we just left our ground tent standing, 4. Using a ladder to access and leave the roof tent, and balancing yourself on the rear tires when packing it up is inherently risky (though you do get quicker and more skilled with practice). We were supplied with 2 propane tanks and 2 burners which worked just fine. Perhaps a wind shield around the burner is something we would bring next time as we routinely experienced strong winds that caused longer cooking times. The bedding consisted of a sheet for the mattress, two sleeping bags and 2 pillows. They also provided two bath towels. In the Golden Gates highlands (around 2000 m) the sleeping bags were a bit chilly and required some extra clothes at night, but in most other places we didn’t even zip up our sleeping bags (October weather). Pots and pans, cups, cutlery etc. are plentiful, including a “braai” you can put over a wood fire. The recovery equipment is good, but we only used the air compressor to air the tires back up. Basic tools, axe, first aid kit, winch, sand ladders, fuel funnel, spare fuses etc. were also supplied, but we never got into trouble with the landcruiser; no technical problems and we never got stuck. The 12V fridge runs off the auxiliary battery and is fantastic to keep food and water cool. A nice security feature is that the auxiliary battery can also be used to start the engine, should the main battery fail. Chairs and a metal table were supplied. The metal table is positioned under the roof rack… brilliant storage, efficient use of space, easy to get to (designed by Front Runner). Additional jerry cans for diesel were also supplied (2x20L) but with the extra large diesel tank mounted under the vehicle we never needed these additional jerry cans in South Africa. However, in very remote areas (Namibia, Botswana), having the additional fuel storage capacity is a must. The camping experience: We cannot imagine a better way to explore South Africa. Hotels do not compare to camping. Camping allowed us to stay in the parks 24/7, save money compared to a hotel, and most importantly, it allows you to be in nature all the time. One night we listened to roaring lions in the distance as we fell asleep! This is a life experience that cannot be beat by fancy hotels.
