We saw Setia Darma House of Mask and Puppets recommended in a guide book and put it on our list while in Ubud. First, adjacent to the parking lot, you'll see a small gift shop, selling authentic Balinese masks, shadow puppets, and jewelry. We liked this, but is was rather underwhelming and we sighed. We thought there would be more. Well, keep walking! You WILL find more! On the other side of a park-like green space you will find a museum housed in four buildings (at least). The masks range from tiny to huge, multi-person varieties, meant to be worn during annual festivals and such. The masks came in every size, shape and facial expression. WOW! We went from being underwhelmed to overwhelmed! You will marvel at the shadow puppet collection and the intricate artistry and craftsmanship on display. How could we be the only visitors there? Spent so much time browsing and reading all the cards (English included) that our guide must have wondered where we went. Well designed, well planned, lots of space to walk and admire. What a find! Do not miss this hidden treasure, just a short distance from the Elephant Cave (which was a let down). ENJOY!

Pieces can be pricey (compared to other vendors) but they are very well designed and of great quality. There were some items on discount as well. I picked up a couple of rings which were bold enough to make a statement yet subtle enough to match many occasions.

Lovely stop on our day trip around this part of Bali. They showed us how they make their jewellery from scratch. I also bought few bits as I found them very unique. Nice souvenir from our honeymoon travels.

Pura Puseh Batuan are shrine owned by Villagers batuan-village-home-of-balinese-paintings" Batuan Village district of Sukawati - Gianyar regency. The Temple is part of the concept of "Tri Kahyangan or Tri Murti" taught by Mpu Kuturan around the 10th century to the Balinese Hindu community at the time. Tri Kahyangan including 3 temples, the Pura Desa or Village Temple as a place to worship God Brahma, Pura Puseh to worship God Vishnu, and the Pura Dalem to worship Lord Shiva.Pura Desa and Pura Puseh Batuan were founded in the year 944 isaka (1020 AD). Nearly 1000 years old. Not all existing buildings were old buildings here, there are some that have undergone renovation. The Meru, Bale-bale, grand Gates and statues are showing us how thick the Balinese ornaments in this temple. At temple parking area, we could see a stage which a place use as a meeting hall and to practice any kind of Balinese dances as Gambuh dance, Pendet dance, etc. Then, in the middle yard of temple there is a long building / bale called the Bale Agung and Bale Kulkul (a gong mad by wood or bamboo). In this yard there is also a high entrance Balinese Gate called the Kori Agung, which is flanked by the many guardian statues shaped the giant sculpture. The function of Kori Agung is the door where the exit and entry for the gods symbolized by a small statue called Pratima. Next to the Kori Agung there are two small doors as a place of exit and entry of people into the temple's main yard. In the main yard of the temple there are some three story Meru and Bale Pengiyasan as a symbol of the temple of Besakih, there is also a building called Padmasana as a place of worship to Sang Hyang Widhi, the only one Bali Hindu's God. If we want to know the ancient sculptures in this temple, please come to the back yard, a building called Wantilan Purbakala as a place for all the ancient sculptures of this temple, here we can learn about the ancient sculptures and other types of ancient stone.
A most notable landmark is the village temple, known as Pura Puseh with intricate stone carvings. It is located in the northern part of the village, 200 metres off the main road. The temple also has an inscription that testifies to the date of founding of Batuan in 1022 AD. The temple underwent restoration in 1992. It is a five-tiered gateway tower, clearly influenced by Indian religious architecture. Its icons and decorations, however, are typically Balinese in style. The roof of the temple is made of the fibre of chromatic black palm tree. The maintenance of the temple is done by the residents of the village. The temple is situated on the main road from Denpasar to Ubud. A great place to visit and lots of pictures to be taken!

Our driver took us to this wonderful art gallery on the way to Ubud and what was supposed to be a cursory look became an hour long visit that ended with the purchase of a beautiful painting by one of the old masters from Batuan. It is now hanging on my wall and bringing so much joy. Looking forward to visiting this gallery again on the next Bali trip!
