A unique place for food lovers! One of the oldest and most original sardine canneries in the world. Since 1920, Pinhais & Cia specializes in the hand-made and 100% Artisanal Premium Conservas, representing a highly relevant icon of Matosinhos and irreplaceable part of Portugal's historical heritage. A true architectural gem that transports us on a journey into the past. Enter the main hall, enjoy the centenary staircase and try to find our it's very well kept architectonic secret... Have a nice trip!
We fell in love with Pinhais' canned sardines when we visited Lisbon last year. With our return to Portugal, we decided to plan a trip to Pinhais' headquarters in Portos and what an amazing surprise. We were able to get a private tour with the three of us. We saw the process from start to finish using age old processes and materials that deliver a very special product. They take pride in their work and you can see that they do not rush or take short cuts. We met the ladies that do almost all of the process by hand. What a special place. It certainly solidified our desire to only buy Pinhais and Nuri when I can.

Very nice and big space full of shops, not too common. Even the restaurants were very nice and cheap. Enjoyed it very much.

The appearance of the market can hardly be dissociated from the traditional city center and the Municipality of the Matosinhos County. It is a point of reference not only to the residents but also to the occasional visitor, many of which are tourists. Because of its location, it has to be seen as the anchor for urban and commercial revitalization of Matosinhos´s historical center.
If you love fish this is the place. The No 500 and the train from Porto terminate outside. There is a great restaurant attached to the market which will cook any fish you buy. They charge €4.50 for doing it. They give you salad and small potatoes which is extra. Its worth. the trip.Upstairs is the fresh fruit, salad and vegetables. Unfortunately it is a place to also buy live chickens, ducks and rabbit which are caged rather cruelly by European standards. If your squeamish stay on the fish floor!

Great tribute to all the fishermen from Porto, situated on a roundabout by the beach, a impressive piece of artwork. A must see...

This sculpture right on the beach is a must-see. The history behind it is explained and when you see how the artist has depicted the suffering you will be amazed. Incredible!
