The 10 Best Free Things to do in Limburg Province, The Netherlands

January 23, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

Getting its name from the medieval Duchy of Limburg (now split among Holland, Belgium and Germany and the birthplace of the infamously pungent Limburger cheese), Limburg is the Netherlands’ southernmost region. Many of the area’s best attractions are concentrated in the capital of Maastricht, but other sights include the 12th-century Valkenburg castle ruins, the 17th-century Eijsden castle, the 20th-century Glaspaleis (built next to a medieval church at Heerlen), and De Meinweg National Park.

The walks around the lakes and water are beautiful, so is the town with the live music from the bandstand. I was recommended to come to this town as an off the beaten track and it certainly is but its also vibrant, colourful and friendly. Highly recommended

Thanks to our stay in Roermond we discovered this beautiful nature reserve. Highly recommended for cyclists and hikers. Certain zones are quiet zones and therefore forbidden for cars, motorcycles and mopeds. Very well signposted paths for cyclists and hikers.

Do not miss this book store, it will be an experience you will never have again. The cafe at the back of the store is a perfect place to pause your day and take in the wonderful tea, coffee and treats. I can’t even explain the feeling you get when you enter this ancient church which has been restored to be a fascinating book store with thousands of books, music, magazines and loads of wonderful trinkets. A must see! Side effect is, you end up in the heart of Masstricht, a world heritage site, you won’t regret this visit.
