Gwangju (Korean pronunciation: [kwaŋ.dʑu]) is the sixth largest city in South Korea. It is a designated metropolitan city under the direct control of the central government's Home Minister. The city was also the capital of South Jeolla Province until the provincial office moved to the southern village of Namak in Muan County in 2005.

Drove up Mudeungsan National Park for an early morning hike. The gradual slope makes it an easy climb for all. At the base of the mountain is Jeungsimsa Temple, a car park and terminus for bus No. 9 from Gwangju Bus Terminal (U-Square Terminal). Check-in at the ranger station for maps (English and Chinese available) and recommendations of walking trails. Certainly not as crowded as the more popular Naejangsan yet a great hike to enjoy the autumn foliage at a leisurely pace. The maple tunnels are at its full glory when the trees turn a hue of red, deep yellow and orange for a breathtaking canopy of colourful autumn beauty. The carpet of fallen leaves is also a magical and romantic sight to behold. Very refreshing and crisp air, good trails and friendly local hikers. Best in late October and early November.

Take the 5.18 bus here. It is a very moving experience. It is very English friendly as there are tour guides all around. The 5.18 cemetery includes a 40 minute video presentation. It should take you about 2 hours there to see everything.

Opened in 2015, the Asia Culture Center is a world-class cultural complex specializing in cultural exchange, collection and study of cultural materials, content creation and production, exhibitions, performances, archiving, and distribution, all focusing on Asian cultures.
This facility embraces many of the ideas of what a museum, gallery and cultural center should be like in the future. It contains libraries, archives, teaching rooms, creative areas for children and hosts many ongoing events an exhibits. Research ahead of time because there is too much to take in during one visit. In late August I saw the World Music Festival with numerous acts in several outdoor listening areas. Architecturally very fascinating. Easy to get to via Metro subway, just get off at stop 104.
