Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England. It has the highest elevation – about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level – of any market town in England. Close to the county boundary with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is described as "the gateway to the Peak District National Park". A municipal borough until 1974, Buxton was then merged with other localities lying primarily to the north, including Glossop, to form the local government district and borough of High Peak within the county of Derbyshire. Despite being in the East Midlands, economically Buxton is within the sphere of influence of Greater Manchester. The population of the town was 22,115 at the 2011 Census.

Read the reviews and thought we'd give a go. Didn't book but got a table as it was early. Told straight away that it was ours for 90 minutes. Not an issue for us. Covid check in and staff fully masked up, menu explained and our first cockails ordered. Sit back and watch the magician do his stuff. 2 Tonka bombs dispatched. Superb first round drinks. Wife chatted about her favorite tipple and they were more than pleased to invent a cocktail for her, she even named it ' The Cheeky' Brillant from start to finish. Would recommend to anyone. If you are going late in the evening booking is essential.

A stroll through Buxton Country park from Poole's Cavern leads to the summit of Grin Low at 1440' altitude and the Victorian viewing tower of Solomon's Temple.Built in 1896 the 20' tower with spiral stairs give a magnificent platform to view the surrounding Peak District landscape and the Spa town of Buxton in the valley below.
Lovely walk up from Pooles Cavern through the woods to Solomon's Temple, the effort to get there is worth it with the views of Buxton that are brilliant - and ace to climb up the inside of the tower.

Open to the public and the staff are welcoming, this is one of the many "must sees" in Buxton. It is such an impressive structure, once the worlds biggest unsupported dome and still the largest in Europe, they really knew how to build to impress in the 18th century and there is such elegance about it as well. It is hard to believe that this magnificent structure was built for horses with accommodation provided for servants and ostlers. Wander around and admire and there is also a cafe if you wish to sit and enjoy the surroundings. It must be a wonderful venue for concerts etc.

Wonders of the Peak is our main, permanent exhibition at Buxton Museum & Art Gallery - with over 1,200 objects on display, covering 360 million years of history. Geology: explore a time when sharks swam across the Peak District and when giant dragonflies rules the sky! Ice Age Animals: See the massive power of the cave lion's hind leg and the deadly teeth of the scimitar-toothed cats. Archaeology: From pre-historic tools, to Roman jewellery, from Saxon silver to medieval coins - see what generations of the Peak District people have left behind. Art: Admire the beauty of Blue John and visit the largest collection of Ashford Black Marble on public display, and a changing display of art works in both our art galleries. The Boyd Dawkins Study: Home to a mermaid and more - an Edwardian study, commemoration the many people who have given objects to the museum, particularly two scientists, Sir William Boyd Dawkins and Dr J Wilfrid Jackson.
Free entry, lots of very interesting exhibits and displays, and two galleries for exhibitions. The history of the Peak District is laid out in an informative time line with a number of beautiful and appropriate objects, there are videos of (for example) the construction of a flint axe and the chance for children to dress up. Very worthwhile visit.

My first visit since all the tunnels have been opened, and it is awesome to walk along and through these feats of Victoirian engineering. An absolute must if in the Peak.

Floors of every kind of book all very well named. Very interesting really old antique books. Local new books for sale. You can sit in a comfy room surrounded by children's books and have a drink with your read. Interesting decor with an old fireplace full of memorabilia. Be careful with the steep stairs.

Enjoyed spending a while in this quirky little micro pub with a funky feel and chilled out vibe. Something is bound to catch your eye from the brightly coloured beer mats wall and a popular culture display of Marvel comics, iconic film posters and character cut-outs to the prints and the selection of books, including 'The Unpublished Spike Milligan' and 'The Far Side'.

January 2021. The gallery is closed temporarily due to Tier 4 COVID restrictions. We will re-open when these restrictions are lifted. The Green Man is a vibrant, independent gallery and arts centre, managed and run by artists. A popular creative hub for Buxton, the gallery hosts ever-changing exhibitions of contemporary art and craft by its Resident Artists and guests from across the region. Paintings, photography, printmaking, mixed media, mosaics, textiles, jewellery and ceramics plus hundreds of prints, unique gifts and cards at affordable prices. Before the pandemic, The Green Man also hosted an exciting programme of workshops, classes, live performances and other arts events and offered spaces for hire. It hopes to resume this programme once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
The Green Man Gallery is in an extension to the Museum, and is an excellent venue, showcasing local artists and local talent. The place has a varied programme of exhibitions, workshops, arts events and love music. It is well lit and airy and has plenty of space. It is well worth a visit
