Golden Cap Estate

Reviewed By Bear_Tiger - Bromley, United Kingdom

We walked up to Golden Cap from Seatown, it’s about a mile up from the car park in Seatown. A fair climb, but this is the highest point on the south coast! We carried on past Golden Cap and turned right towards St Gabriel’s Wood, and right again back round past Langdon Hill where we did a circuit of the wood and then back down to Seatown. The entire walk was 4.5 miles and took us 1 hour 45 minutes.

Artwave West Gallery

Artwave West, with its stylish open plan viewing space, specialist museum lighting and crisp uncluttered décor provides a superb place to enjoy looking at and contemplating artworks. The gallery has established itself as one of the principal independent contemporary art venues in the Southwest, by carefully selecting artists and attracting professional practitioners with impressive national and international exhibiting profiles. A number of regular Artwave West artists are frequently nominated for prestigious exhibitions and awards in cultural capitals such as London, New York and Venice. A lively programme of frequently changing exhibitions together with a large stock of additional artwork guarantees there is always something new to view. This year has seen the addition of a teaching Academy next to the gallery where a wide selection of Art Courses take place run by Exhibiting Artists and professional tutors.

I am a grateful frequent visitor to this splendid gallery for contemporary art. The exhibitions are always breathtakingly fresh, well curated, and enormously inspiring. Donna and Martin, quite apart from being talented artists themselves, are such lovely people, and Donna's welcoming smile is infectious. The artists represented are of the highest order ensuring that your visit will be highly rewarding.

Church of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and St. Ignatius

We came upon this museum almost by chance. The church is just out of Chideock off A35 (be patient with signage) with a small car park. Beautiful building in a serene location which belies the history of Catholic persecution. The museum is in a small anteroom accessed from inside the church. It was simply amazing - full of local history, artefacts, photos, exhibits, etc and with an incredibly informative story of the history of local Catholicism. We were absolutely blown away - not professionally curated but all the better for that. Don't miss it!

Based in Bridport's Historic Industrial & Vintage Quarter, it's one of the secret jewels of Dorset. Clocktower Music Bridport is based in an area that stretches back more than 200 years. Bridport has a thriving outdoor Street Market on Wednesday and Saturday, weather permitting alongside well established Artist Studios, Music Venues. The surrounding area has appeared in many TV Series and Films, including Broadchurch, if the had a Record Shop it would probably be Clocktower Music.

West Bay Discovery Centre

A treasure trove of information about West Bay in a beautifully restored Methodist Chapel on the beach. There is something to interest all ages and the interactive activities are particularly popular with families. A fun way to learn about the Jurassic coast, forces of nature, shipbuilding, tourism, local industry, trails and walks and information about the filming of Broadchurch. We have a range of visitor information and a small gift shop that includes quality local products. We are operated by a local charity and mainly run by volunteers, admission is free but donations are invited to help with our running costs. Visited here this morning for the first time and was very impressed by everything in there. Although only a small building, it is well set out and full of interesting artefacts, pieces of local history and wonderful old photographs all creating a snapshot of West Bay and it’s past. It brought back memories of monthly visits made, as children, to visit a Great-Aunt who lived in The Old Shipyard. Very friendly and approachable staff which all added to the ambience. Thank you very much; have already recommended it to friends!

Hive Beach

Reviewed By JanineW264 - Addlestone, United Kingdom

This was a wonderful find, with the bonus of National Trust Members being able to park for free!! The car park is large and is one both sides of the road. The walk to the beach is a short gentle slope. The shingle is fine and therefore not too difficult for us 50+ people. There is a small, and very informative, National Trust Shop (where you can also join up to become a member), as well as a very busy café overlooking the bay. There are miles to walk along the Jurassic coast and warnings not to sit under overhanging cliffs. We walked up the green hill to the east arriving at a small Pill Box - quite a steep walk should you have breathing difficulties, but manageable with stops. Would certainly recommend for families and people of all ages, maybe take a picnic to avoid the café queues. The toilets were slightly disappointing in that they were smelly and without toilet paper on this particular occasion, but we would certainly want to return to this beach.

Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre

The Centre provides information on fossils, fossil hunting and the local coastal and marine wildlife. Facilities at the centre include interactive computers, hands on displays, marine tanks and a video microscope, all of which can help you to discover more about our stretch of the coastline. You will always find a helpful warden or volunteer who can help you identify your fossil finds. The Centre also has disabled access. Our Jurassic Theatre shows a short film on 'The Jurassic Coast and Finding fossils at Charmouth' (adults £1, children 50p). We also have a shop stocked with books for all levels, including some of our own publications, toys and souvenirs. Throughout the year we run guided fossil hunting walks and rockpooling walks along the local coastline. The Centre also has an extensive education programme. For information about the activities we have to offer to school groups please see our Primary Schools and Secondary Schools sections.

We loved this. Amazing fossil hunting guides who were patient, encouraging and enthusiastic (especially Dan) have turned my little girl into a modern day Mary Anning. We found a load of fossils and our children (5&4) are now completely fired up potential palaeontologists (as are their Mum and Dad). Thanks very much Charmouth Heritage Centre!
