The 10 Best Forests in Ohio, United States

July 8, 2021 Franklyn Hardiman

If you are looking for an active place to stay with world-class attractions, Ohio’s major cities can satisfy any vacation desire. Each offers its own distinct flavor of fun, from professional sports – Bengals (Cincinnati), Cavaliers (Cleveland) and Indians (Cleveland again) – to museums, outdoor activities and more. One of the most famous is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. If football is your thing, don’t miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For the science-minded, visit the meat eaters at the Carnivore Conservation Center in the Wilds near Cambridge, dedicated to the breeding and scientific study of endangered mid-sized carnivores. Kids will also love Planet Snoopy in Sandusky or the Columbus Zoo’s Zoombezi Bay Waterpark and Jack’s Landing rides.

The LC Bike Trails are a hidden treasure in our community. With lots of places to access the more than 45 miles of trails, you can ride, walk, or run as much, or as little, as you want - all surrounded by the beauty of Licking County as the trails run through forests, fields, along the river, etc. A great ride whether you wander east or west.

Eldon Russell Park

I drove through the park in my car as the weather was sunny and clear. I got out a few times to take closer looks at things that caught my eye. I did hike a trail or two and remarked to myself what a great place to preserve and some people were smart enough to save this space from development. Nature was alive and thriving here. i wished I lived closer to Eldon Russell Park so I could enjoy it more often. There is so much to see there.

Brown Family Environmental Center

Brown's is a great family spot for nature study. They have so much to do for kids and adults seeking nature experiences. We've gone to family events, bird walks, herb hikes, nature hikes, creeking adventures, and kids' nature activities. We even had one of our children's birthday parties there several years ago. The director did a bird walk for the kids and brought some of the animals out for the kids to touch. We've had many, many great experiences here and go several times a year.

Swine Creek Reservation

Reviewed By Bobo185 - Chardon, United States

I went to The Swine Creek Reservation late in the morning on a sunny Monday in mid-October. The leaves were beginning to change, but still a little way from peak color. I have been to almost all the Geauga County parks, but this was my first time here. I think this is the best park to get in a good hike. My plan was to hike three or 4 miles, but due to some trail confusion ended up doing more like 5 miles. The wagon trail is a nice walk with crushed gravel and only some up and down. The meadowlark trail is fairly flat on a grass path through an old farm field that now has lots of wildflowers and ends up at a pond…while I did not see a meadowlark, I did see a female pheasant. Most of the rest of the trails are rough and unimproved. There are steep climbs and descents and many creek crossings…so wear proper footwear after rains…I did not have any problem staying dry. My favorite trail was the Grey Fox trail as it was a good walk, well-marked and varied habitat along the way. I do wish the trails were a little better marked. I have the trail map on my phone and still found it hard to go where I intended…there are some mystery trails that are not on the map. The are also a disappointing number of trail marker posts in place, but the directions or trail names have fallen off. The back trails are particularly hard to follow when the leaves are on the ground…They are narrow and easily covered. I highly recommend this park for hiking.

We traveled to Bruckner Nature Center this month just to buy a homemade birdhouse in their gift shop. People make handmade items and consign them here. We have been here several times to hike or to see all the wild animals that they are rehabilitating in cages.Highly recommended.

Miami Whitewater Forest

Reviewed By interceptpubs - Columbus, United States

At 4000+ acres, this is the largest park in Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It offers a wide range of facilities from an 18 hole golf course to an 85 acre lake with boat rentals (kayaks, paddle and peddle boats, etc.) and a snack bar. There are picnic areas, playgrounds and foot, bicycle, and even horse trails, as well as a camp ground with electrical hookups, shower building, and waste dump facility. There's even an 11 acre, off lease dog park with a variety of other pooch amenities. The visitor center can help learn about all of these facilities, as well as providing nature education and even a gift shop. We stopped here early on a weekend morning to take a walk - we parked by the lake and visitor center and after looking around there, took off on the Shaker Trace trail. This trail actually has a 1.4 mile inner loop (it is also known as the fitness trail with a number rudimentary exercise stations with parallel bars, etc. along the way) and a 7.8 mile outer loop. Unfortunately, we didn't have the 2.5 hours to go around the outer loop, so did the inner loop and then walked for another hour or so on part of the outer loop to get a feel for it as well. Both are paved and accommodate both foot and bicycle traffic. The inner loop is mostly flat with a mix of wooded and open areas, while the outer loop gets into a bit more interesting terrain with more natural surroundings away from roads. We saw a variety of wildlife (as well as few people, but being early not too many) including deer, herons, wild turkey, foxes, hawks, etc. Both trails were very well maintained. We only scratched the surface of all that this park has to offer and will undoubtedly be back to enjoy it further when we can spend more time.
