Giorgio did more than show my family around Puglia, he was our tour guide through our own history and roots! He worked with us for weeks before our visit to build an itinerary in which we toured Bari, Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Lecce, Matera, and many other towns throughout the region. We learned to make authentic Pugliese orecchiette, drank local wine, ate raw fish fresh from the sea, and shipped back a lifetime supply of Pugliese olive oil (the finest in the world). But the crown jewel of our time in Puglia was a visit to our ancestral hometown of Grumo Appula. Giorgio made sure that that our first visit to my grandparents’ hometown was fulfilling, walk down a street named for one of my ancestors, and even helped us connect with our relatives there (who we had never met before). By the end of two separate visits to Puglia, I feel connected to this beautiful region in a way I never thought possible, and I regularly stay in touch with I said of my family I never knew existed.
