The 10 Best Food & Drink in Valletta, Island of Malta

October 10, 2021 Mikaela Didonna

Founded in 1565 by the Order of St John as a refuge for soldiers returning from the Crusades, Valletta is now the capital of Malta and a piece of living history. With an unsurpassed collection of original Baroque architecture, fortified city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the spectacular Co-Cathedral of St John, which features intricately carved stone vaults and a famed painting by Caravaggio, it is no wonder that this smallest of European capital cities is a world heritage site.

Seafood antipasti at The Pod with MCA and Chef Ariel. Learnt so many interesting skills and can now really appreciate what goes into the preparation of the delicious seafood antipasti I enjoy so much. Hygiene and social distancing were both given their full importance so we felt safe too. The food sampling , paired with some lovely chilled white wine was a delicious way to end a busy and interesting , even in my case, challenging evening . Don’t underestimate what it takes to fillet a raw fish...

Trabuxu Wine Bar

Vin et fromage. Vino y queso. Vino e formaggio… No matter what language you’re speaking, everyone knows that cheese and wine are the ultimate combo. Nestled below street level in a 400 year old stone vaulted cellar, Trabuxu Wine Bar has been serving its patrons for over 15 years and is Valletta’s premier wine bar. As a landmark to locals, and visitors to this heritage listed city, Trabuxu Wine Bar is cozy and intimate in winter and boisterous and outgoing in summer with guests spilling up and into the stoned stepped street above to enjoy the evening’s warmth. Thanks to Kris Fenech Soler’s penchant for consistency and high standards, lovers of good wine flock weekly. A popular post- theatre and concert hub ensures a colourful and eclectic crowd are often in attendance offering lively conversation and a vibrant energy. International holiday-makers and those new to the island will feel like locals instantly thanks to our committed and welcoming staff. Serious wine and cheese aficionados will appreciate our calcium boosting cheese menu and our highly trained staff will demystify the experience for beginners. All cheeses are hand selected from our reputable suppliers, and can be purchased by the gram. You may purchase each cheese individually or try our all-inclusive cheese board with 50 grams of each. Our selection of cheeses may vary due to demand and availability. We also have a delicate selection of cured meats and salumi available. Our in-house chicken liver parfait and terrine are not to be missed. Orders are accompanied by fresh Maltese bread, water crackers and a selection of chutneys and jams. Bookings are recommended, especially on Friday and Saturday nights to avoid disappointment. Also available for private functions. Every Friday, from 19 May, we’ll be kicking off the weekend early and opening at 16:00. Serving patrons over the age of 18 only.
