The 10 Best Food & Drink in San Sebastian - Donostia, Basque Country

November 21, 2021 Malia Yoakum

While many visitors come for the beaches, arts celebrations and fiestas, San Sebastian-Donostia is serious about its food and drink. The Old Quarter’s narrow, winding streets are full of bars and restaurants, and in the modern city, sidewalk cafes are all around. The city specializes in seafood. Just make sure you know not to expect dinner at 6 or 7 p.m.—that’s much too early in Spain. Instead, tide yourself over with tapas, and enjoy eating and drinking late into the night.

San Sebastian Walking Tours

The most authentic and economically priced All-Inclusive type Pintxo/Tapas Tour or our City Sightseeing and Cultural Tour given in English by an Native ENGLISH SPEAKING EXPAT. Let me use my 18 years of teaching experience to help you understand this unique region and culture. I know what information is useful, from why you are not in Spain to the difference between tapas and pintxos, how and when to do things, how to pay, where to eat and so on, plus tons of other restaurants and outlying attractions. I offer the best walking tour in town. To do Pintxos right, you really need someone on the inside, someone that knows where to go on the particular day you are here and can help you get the most out of what is available. I help you explore flavors, but nothing over the top, I am very traditional in my selection of local Pintxos Bars and I pair them with local wines. I do show you the most modern bars as well. My tours are designed to give my guests a great head start on this area.

A San Sebastian Pintxo Crawl

OPEN TO MAKE RESERVATIONS 7 DAYS/WEEK. Gastronomic tour given in English by a native speaker. I am a local now, but I am originally from the States and through my job working internationally, I have been exposed to various cultures and their related cuisines. I have taught adults in various environments for over 20 years now. Once I married my wife who is from San Sebastian, and whose father just so happens to be a veteran of the culinary industry, I hit pay dirt of sorts. We used to visit here twice a year for about 8 years before we made the big move. During our visits and from the time we have lived here (8 yrs. today) I have been observing and learning where the locals go and where the tourist typically go. I was taken by the hand to the real pintxo bars from the old days by family and friends, into the bars that they grew up going to during the evolution of the Pintxo to what it has become today. Please, let me show you the real pintxo scene!
