Every Wednesday and Saturday the great Sarlat market attracts vendors from the region.
The markets, held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings are full of wonderful foods;breads, foie gras (a specialty here), wines, fruits and vegetables, spices & herbs, as well as other niche articles such as walnuts, walnut oil and vin de noix, which is made from walnuts when they are still green. The old walled town is built of of stone houses which date back hundreds of years and with the assistance of forward looking government officials has been refurbished to its present day glory by showing ancient architecture in modern times. A special Festival takes place in early March, the Fest-Oie, which celebrates the geese of Sarlat which provide the foie-gras gras in its many forms, some of which are offered for tasting during the Fest weekend. Sarlat also hosts weekend celebrations of film, theatre and local cuisine over the summer and the fall. It is a lovely place to visit; be sure to take part in a free walking tour which is put on by the tourism bureau of Sarlat which will give insights into the fascinating history of this beautiful town and the region.

A great market with lots of stuff to look at and buy or just to see what the French people buy on a daily basis - fruit and vegetables that are most intersting for example different coloured tomatoes! Some speciality cakes the Caneles and the pastries with vanilla cream in the centre. Meat and fish of all kinds. There are also places to eat - oysters, breakfast, lunch. We went twice during our 5 day stay: we had lunch one day and breakfast another. Both were excellent. Go and see this place,it tells you more about France and the French now than the historic museums although they can tell you so much about the past.

SUMMER night market under the covered market on the main square of the village, every wednesday evening in july and august. Start at 7:00 pm
Spending a night at the market is a fun way to pass the evening. Get there early, claim your spot, walk around teh town, and then buy food and wine and enjoy your meal. They prefer you buy the wine there and have a nice local selection for very reasonable. The food is excellent and sharing works well. Oh, and bring a plate and silverware or buy a kit from a vendor.

So I love farmers' markets - local produce, local bread, local people - the world over these are always a destination for me. So, Montalivet France - I mean how big can the market be? Answer - huge - great food and great values - this is a must see for anyone who loves great food and nice people. And the Oysters are amazing! Nice tablecloths and linens from Amy by the way!
