California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

The place to meet new friends is at this old-fashioned street fair with sidewalk performers, musicians, farmer's market, gifts and lots of food.
I happened upon this Palm Springs experience a few months ago, and have repeated it ever since. It's very pleasant walking down the main street among arts and crafts, good stands, a mini farmers market, locals walking their dogs, and a village atmosphere on a large scale. I specially like the tiles/coasters made from retro posters and have started a collection. They can be found at stelladivina.com. These and other excellent arts and crafts make it worth spending at least a couple of hours browsing, and sampling some of the street food while mingling with the locals and tourists.

Every Thursday night through out the year, the city hosts a delightful outdoor market/festival where local farmers sell the freshest fruits, vegetables and produce while local musicians and performers entertain the crowds.
Love the farmers’ market in SLO. It’s a street party every week! Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area.

A friendly, community spirit pervades this wonderful outdoor marketplace, where you'll find the usual market goods, produce that is mostly organic and fresh bread, seafood and baked goods offered on a weekly basis.

Santa Monica has a few farmers markets; the downtown Wednesday market is the best. The Saturday morning Virginia Park market, which we attended today, is tiny by comparison. Tiny as it was, it was a great stop and a great way to finish our Santa Monica trip. Read on for details. Located near Santa Monica College, the free parking starts to fill early; we arrived a few minutes after 8am as things were warming up and parked easily. The vendors have arrived from 2-3 hours away in multiple directions. There were trays of giant strawberries, tables of beautiful heirloom tomatoes (at $3.50/pound), fresh flowers, apples, persimmons and an array of vegetables. Food trucks offered fresh juice, coffee and baked goods. The winner for me: beekeeper Don from Saugus and a jar of peach blossom honey. If you have never been to a farmers market and are in Santa monica when they are running, check it out; you will leave a fan.

Open 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays at Santa Barbara and Cota Streets.
I've noticed many more organic vendors in the last few months as well as more stands who claim they sell what they grow. There is a widespread of fruits and veggies available and also one can find eggs and meats. It's lively and there are lots of musicians spread throughout the venue making for a nice musical background while you shop. One can use a credit card to obtain tokens to pay for produce at each stand.

There’s no shortage of these in San Diego county, and this one in particular is very close to where I live, so yes, I’m biased to love going here. And many of the vendors are sure to be at other markets around the county, but, you just can’t beat some of the organic foods in particular found here every week. My favorite and regular go to stalls include: Smit’s Farms, for the BEST apples I’ve ever eaten (when in season); and The Greek fellow who sells delightful olives and cheeses, while sharing his life stories in the fashion industry. If you live in or are just visiting Oceanside and can make this Thursday morning (9am-1pm) experience, you won’t be disappointed! I’ve been going for 30 years now, and still love it! It’s a good time for the entire family. Oh, and don’t miss the Friends of the Oceanside Library who also sell great books, etc. for great prices.
