El Toledo Coffee Tour

We are a sustainable organic coffee farm. We have been using sustainably organic practices for over fourteen years. Today we are happy to consider ourselves environmentalists first, and coffee farmers second.

Reviewed By CJDueck - Altona, Canada

Highly recommend this coffee tour, if you enjoy learning the difference between organic and truly natural processes of coffee production. We have toured three other coffee plantations in CR and they were all unique and enjoyable, but this one I especially appreciated for the authenticity and the small farmer perspective.

Rancho Raices de Osa

We are a local family farm, we do home made traditional chocolat and we share all about our culture, traditions, fruit trees, cultivations, animal farm and more !!!

This was a wonderful tour given by a beautiful Costa Rican family who share their chocolate farm experience directly with you. They let you and your kids participate as much as you want in the whole chocolate making experience. The guide Herman was very knowledgeable about native plants that he grows on his farm and their various uses and you get to sample many along the way. If you visit the Osa peninsula I highly recommend you visit this family and support their tour! Covid has hurt many families like this in Costa Rica who depend on ecotourism and I recommend you support a beautiful family like this over some ecotourism corporation.

Chocorart

In the Chocolate tour you first visit the cacao plantation and receive an insight of the work involved in growing, care taking cacao trees and harvesting the cacao pots. There are other tropical fruit trees and large up to 60m tall shade trees native to the area of tropical rainforest, inhabited by diverse wildlife such as the howler monkeys, agoutis, kinkajous, sloths and many birds among others. All is managed organically, respecting the natural environment. You learn about the fermentation process and visit our traditional sun drier covered with the cacao beans. We taste different fruits from other trees depending the season. In our workshop you will receive a fruit juice of the farm and appreciate all the manual work to manufacture the chocolate, the way how the cacao beans are roasted on fire, then broken with stone and grinded by hand. You will come into the enjoyment to taste an ancient special chocolate drink and at the end a tasty dessert with the freshly made chocolate.

I didn't get to go on this tour as I was in injured, but I sent my teens and husband. When I asked my teen how it was, he said it was amazing....so that says a lot! What made it special was all the fruit that the gentleman picked along the way and shared ( a tropical fruit wonderland) and the process of making chocolate by hand. It was a very close to nature experience for my kids, which they rarely get to see anymore. Hard to look up as this person doesn't advertise very well, but I think the tour is at 2 or 3pm on most afternoons.

A real true gem in Santa Bárbara de Heredia. The property is beautiful, but most of all it is nicely managed. The themed terraces offer a beautiful option to learn about different plants. We really enjoyed the self guided tour though the botanical gardens. Pretty much every plant and every tree is labeled with accurate information. In our visit, we took the lunch option. Food quality was top notch, and service was impeccable. The main building is spacious and sober. The restaurant is well ventilated and has beautiful views of the central valley. We ended up our day with a visit to the Meadery, where we were treated nicely by Michael and Alejandra, who explained the mead making process to us and offered a free tasting of a wonderful Jabuticaba mead. We had an amazing time.

We stayed in Giancarlo's single cabin for one night. Spacious and nicely designed kitchen and 2 bedrooms. The patio opens to mountain scenery and is a oasis of fresh air and serenity. We had a tour of his farm; berry and fruit trees and his happy chickens. Close to Cachi Lake and Orosi valley. One of our favourites on our holiday. Thanks for the wonderful stay.
