The 10 Best Farmers Markets in California, United States

March 24, 2022 Lashaunda Abraham

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Monterey Market has had the freshest, most flavorful produce around. During citrus season, they carry a large range of options for your table. They have the largest range of mushrooms I’ve seen anywhere. If you are curious about trying some different produce, this is the place. I have always found staff to ge very helpful.

Marin County Farmers' Market--San Rafael

This is, by far, the best Farmer’s Market in the North Bay. Just a pleasant Sunday, with marginal parking nearby, though plenty, if you can walk 2-3 blocks. Wonderful vendors, with moderate pricing on vegetables. Quite a few bakers, a nice spattering of artisans, kombucha, hot foods, olives - it only gets better as the warm season progresses.

Hollywood Farmers Market

This is a great spot for locals to shop every Sunday morning. The second oldest farmers market in LA County, I personally think it’s the best one bar none. Four full city blocks of fresh baked breads, an astounding array of organic fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy and meat products, plus a wild array of crafts. Some of the best buskers as well playing everything from bluegrass to jazz. Great people watching. Great place to come for breakfast or lunch. A place where you get to know your farmer as well as your neighbors!

Parrish Pioneer Ranch

Apple ranch featuring fresh produce, cider, jams, jellies, wines and more in the main barn, along with several smaller specialty shops featuring antiques, fine home decor, clothes, toys, and gifts. The restaurant on the premises offers delicious sandwiches and other lunch and dinner fares, and handicap-accessible restrooms . There is a beautiful picnic park on the grounds, and several animal enclosures for free viewing. On Sundays during fall there is a free Pirate Stunt Show in an outdoor theater. The main barn has a snack bar with fairground-type food, along with some more high-end foods such as New Zealand style meat pies. Local vendors will also be offering their wares during the fall months, which includes everything from kettle corn to hand-made crafts. Entrance and parking are free. Open year-round, only closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays from December to August. As a bonus, Oak Glen is usually around ten degrees cooler than the valley during the summers.
