OSLOB WHALE SHARK ENCOUNTER SHARED TOUR BOOKING NO: 774491411 I had bought this tour from Cebu Trip Tours, which according to their website was with the possibility of cancellation and on February 13, 2020 I requested the cancellation. They replied that in 20-30 working day they would make the refund, but to date, it has not been made. I have been sending several emails, at first with a response apologizing and begging me to be patient that the refund would be made. More than 6 months have passed, they still do not refund the tour and now they do not even respond to my emails.

This is a 3.5 = Pretty good. the guides were kind and resourceful. For the price this was a lovely way to spend the afternoon, the snorkling and island were beautiful. The guides did not actually know much about the islands or the environment, but were good people who need jobs. The boat was leaking diesel and they had to repair the engine several times. I didn't blame them, but the tour operator definitely needs more sustainable boats, it just does not make sense to send gas leaking, oily boats out into such beauty. Tourists - take a bit more time and find the highest rated green and in terms of guide training!

I visited Oslob twice, in 2013 and 2015, and the second time was really crowded as hundreds were waiting to go see the sharks. I can see that some people are concerned about the ethicality of whale shark tourism in Oslob. As an animal lover, and especially a big fan of the whale sharks, I would like to share my opinion. 1. In a perfect world, we would love to see wild animals roam free with no interference from humans, and we should close all the zoos and let animals go back to the wild. However, I am sure the majority of people would never have seen a lion if not for zoos, let alone exotic species such as the icon of WWF – the giant panda. Is it important to see animals? Let’s just say, if you’ve never seen a panda, you would not love it, or put in effort to save it. For the whale sharks, some of my Chinese friends who swam with them vowed that they are never eating shark fin soup again. So, the Oslob whale shark operation is at least a good education program. 2. As far as I know, the practice of feeding the sharks in Oslob began decades ago: local fishermen use feeds to lead the sharks away from their fishing area, so that the sharks do not damage their nets. Then some entrepreneur saw this and suggested to the fishermen to turn it into a tourist attraction. The experience of Oslob showed the fishermen all over Philippines that live whale sharks mean $ year after year, so they bought in to the protection program. 3. The guides at Oslob told me that there are only 14 sharks that come to feed here, but not all of them show up everyday, sometimes there are only 3 or 4, so the sharks do not depend on the feed at all. In fact, whale sharks eat tonnes of plankton daily, and there is no way the fishermen can supply them with enough. So the sharks have to feed elsewhere – Oslob is just a snack-stop for them. 4. Since only the same group of sharks show up, these must be non-migrating sharks: they are either resident sharks originally, or they have decided to settle down – which is not uncommon. We humans should understand that animals do not want to migrate if they don’t have to: every year, some 25% of all migrating wildebeests perish in Africa. The animals would avoid it if they can. Several years ago when a director of WWF gave a talk on the subject in Hong Kong, I had an opportunity to discuss with him about Oslob, and he agreed that the verdict is still out on Oslob. In summary, is the Oslob operation non-ethical? I suppose the answer is “yes” by definition; but is it bad for the whale sharks? My answer would be “no”. Is it bad for the tourists? Well, it is getting too crowded!

Our trip started with a cancellation and then a no show which added to the journey time. Once out of Cebu City the roads are terrible so it was a very uncomfortable 2 hours. We arrived to chaos and frankly given how crowded you are on the boat as well in the water, it is simply not worth it. Too many people in the water vying for their video or picture. The Whale Sharks were delightful but only for a half hour. The waterfall was the same, crowded and uninspiring. The trip back took 5 hours as traffic was awful. I don't recommend this at all. I know people have to make money and they are all very nice but it simply isn't worth it.

Review south shore Cebu travel and tours: I wanted to do Badjan canyoneering, swim with sardine, snorkel with whale shark within 2 days in Cebu. I found it with South Shore Cebu Travel and tours - the 2D1N Cebu South Tour All in Package Tour. Emails were responded. Cost was confirmed as advertised online (9300 php pp + 500 php per foreigner. Half deposit with 5% credit card fee, rest in cash, for 5 of us). There was not much review for this tour company. I was a little apprehensive, but I decided to take a chance because it fitted in our holiday travel schedule. Now, I have experienced it. There is nothing to fear. It started with pick up at Cebu Airport in a big van for us 5. Because of immigration delay at Cebu Airport, we were 30 min late on meet up time. Our driver advised to switch our itinerary and do Day 2 itinerary first without cutting out any activity. It worked out great without any glitches. We had a quick stop for breakfast and onto Badjan Canyoneering first. There was restroom to change for swimwear. All safety gears and canyoneering guides were included. (Do wear your own water shoes/sandals.) 5 motorbikes drove us to the entrance. We paid additional 500php per person for 1 km long zip line to cut out 35min hiking (this was optional). Canyoneering was must do even for my husband and I who skipped some of the big jumps. Our included lunch was yummy and served at the tour base with rice, chicken, shrimp, stirfry vegetables, mangos and soft drink/coconut. Driver arranged a private long boat for us 5 to Pescador Island, Sardines run and tutle hunting. Pescador Island had clear view of amazing colorful corals and fish. Our boat guides spotted turtles for us to swim with. There were guides to snorkel with you and take photos for you under water at every stop. Their snorkel equipment is ok, and does not include fins. Our day was fun and was almost 7pm when driver took us to Oslob for the night. The Inn advised the driver that their restaurant is closing so our driver took us to a restaurant for dinner (your own fare) before dropping us off at the Inn. Downsouth 118 Inn was ok with basic bedding, hot water. It was sea front and provided breakfast (we had arrange take out because of early activity next day) and lunch. They even allowed us to return after check out to shower/change the next day. However, they charged a small fee for use of additional towel next day. Day 2 was Oslob whale shark swimming. Our driver did everything from checking in, registration, guide us to transfer from parking lot to the event site. There was 2 hour delay from our appointed time due to alot of visitors but our driver patiently kept us updated. We were able to nap in airconditioned van or walk around and take sunrise photos. Again, whale shark swimming was a must. Life jackets and snorkel gears (no fins) provided (cannot swim freely without fin as the water current was strong). Majority of us just hung on to the boat while dipping our snorkel masks under water to see the whales. Next activity to the Sumilon Island had a long long wait for the boat. Our driver again did everything. We just waited patiently at the dock while buying and eating fried banana, roasted corns. There was no sign of where to register or check in. We would not know what to do if trying to do it on our own. We waited 2 hours again before driver negotiated with the boat company that when we return after lunch, we will be given priority boarding which did happen. Our lunch was back at the Inn as we gathered our luggage. After Sumilon Island was Tumalong Falls viewing and Osmena Peak hiking. Again, it was late evening when we returned to Cebu City. Driver was kind to take us to a restaurant and waited and then dropped us off to our airbnb. Nothing more came out of our pockets except tipping and our own dinners. There was no hidden charges. Every detail, entrance fee, local guides, registrations were handled by the driver. Driver spoke English. He handed us off to each local guides/tour personally. We never felt lost. The drive was safe. The van was spacious for us 5 and air conditioned and included water bottles. I would use the tour again when returning to Cebu.
