It's a daily trip of two cities the most important in terms of history and culture in Albania. Rich in history and tradition, Kruja is home of the patriots and the epicenter of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. Shkodra is the cradle of the most important Albanian poets, like Migjeni, painters like Kol Idromeno, and photographers, the Marubi Family. Shkodra houses the haunting Marubi National Photography Museum, which displays the first photo taken in Albania.

Tirana was such an incredible and inspiring stop on my journey, but it wouldn’t have been so without the guidance of this magical human. Ilir. I spent several days with Ilir on various adventures. His knowledge is beyond, both in the rich history of the region but in matters of life as well. He is so special and I’m happy to call him a friend after this chance encounter. This is not just a 5 star rating, it’s a 10. Go and visit Tirana, but see all the other beautiful offerings of this beautiful country.

The tour was great. The cable ride to Mt Dajti was scenic. The hike was hard for me, I have to ask my tour guide to go back. The hike is not for the faint of heart as the climb was stiff. Also the visit to Bunk Art was included which is a very interesting place to go to. Overall I had a good time and my tour guide was great and knowledgeable!

7. Tirana and Kruja, Full Day Trip

Albania Express Travel

Half day is enough to visit Kruja, the old capital of Albania. Located near Tirana, Kruja is the perfect day trip from the capital. Most of its visitors go there for the stunning old bazaar to buy pretty souvenirs like carpets, rugs, and bags. Kruja is also home to one of the oldest castles in the Balkans, which is definitely worth a look, too. Inside the castle’s walls, there is the Scanderbeg Museum, a museum dedicated to a military commander – widely considered by many Albanians to be a national hero. Tirana, is one of the most vibrant places to visit in the country. Tirana should at least include Scanderbeg Square, the heart of the town, and a stroll through Pedonalja, the main pedestrian street of the city that is lined with cafés, bars, theatres and cinemas. Located nearby are BunkArt2, a museum dedicated to the victims of the Communist regime, and the National Gallery of Arts, with artworks by some of the most famous.

I can't thank our tour guide Adam enough for giving us a fun filled day from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to get him as your tour guide you will agree with me that he is one interesting man on this planet! He went above and beyond, even making additional pit stops. He showed us so much in one day that would of easily taken us two to three days to do. The tour exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to do future day trips in other countries/cities with Albanian Express Travel and Adam!

We did not pick Dorien Malaj as our guide in Albania; we were matched up by one of the travel industry’s many anonymous middle men—but the moment we actually met Dorien, we knew we had gotten lucky. He was quick to identify our particular interests and to adjust accordingly. Our focus in Albania was their “accursed mountains” in the north east. We expected that in getting from Dubrovnik to Albania, Montenegro would be little more than a “drive through”. However, Dorien took us on a stunning mountain route that included the two beautiful but very different towns of Kotor and Cetinje, which really put Montenegro on the map for us, an added bonus. Dorien was so well-informed and happy to share both the hard facts and the subtle cultural nuances we were observing. His interactions with local people were very interesting to observe, and his background in Psychology gave him an interesting perspective, greatly enhancing our experience. His personal interests were so varied and wide, and that made looking through his eyes very stimulating for us and made conversation very productive. There was no subject off limits—about either Albania or the US. Dorien has a nice sense of humor that seemed to match ours…so that we had lots of fun together, too. It was a very easy and open relationship.
