Bordering both Austria and Hungary and couched between the Danube and the Little Carpathian Mountains, Bratislava is a picturesque city whose natural surroundings are rivaled only by its own historic architecture. Dating back centuries, the Old Town is home to numerous historic churches, castles, galleries and museums, including the Museum of Jewish Culture and Bratislava City Museum. The surviving fortifications at Michael's Gate provide a glimpse into the medieval history of the city.

It was the perfect way to kickstart my trip to Budapest! Wish I had done this for other routes. This was in stark contrast to my encounter with an over-crowded train from Prague to Bratislava (ugh). Tour guide: Andrea (HU) Andrea never ran out of engaging stories and trivia from Hungary's history. In my next few days in Budapest, I went on a handful of other tours in the city, and I already knew most of what would be said in the intros to Budapest & Hungary! All thanks to what Andrea had taught us during our Sidetrip tour. The hidden gem in this tour is a small synagogue and memorial in Szentendre that I would never have found if I had just gone by what TripAdvisor or travel blogs said. I truly appreciate that Andrea devoted time to discuss the history of the Jewish in Hungary, and made the effort to ensure that we got our facts straight (e.g. the location of the "Shoes on the Danube" memorial isn't actually where the atrocities being referred to happened). Driver: Tomas (HU) Tomas so kindly brought us to a view point with stunning (and crowd-free) vistas of Esztergom [which we were told not all drivers on this tour do]. He notably did this despite some unexpected traffic on the road. I felt safe the whole time during the drives, plus we made it to Budapest on schedule. Logistics: the icing on the cake :P It was superb. Vehicle was clean, looked fairly new and well maintained, spacious and comfortable inside, and had seat belts for everyone. Food actually tasted good where we took our breaks for a morning snack and lunch. Andrea brought us to a money changer that had fair rates. Luggage wasn't a problem because it was in the vehicle the whole time! I can go on and on with other nice things to say... Is this tour cheap? Doesn't seem so at first glance, but it offers so much more value vs. sitting in a crowded intercity train plus taking separate public transport rides out of Budapest for day trips plus generic walking tours. I honestly wish I had done this for my Prague-Bratislava leg, but there wasn't enough demand, so start booking people!!! This is a quality service that deserves to thrive in this industry.

It’s lucky that I sign up this Pub Crawl, I think it’s the best way to meet cool folks and be part of Bratislava‘s nightlife, and Slovakian drinking tradition. The host has great deal of local hidden places, drinks and food that you can enjoy and share.

Insightful, off the beaten track journey in a legendary 1970-1990’s Czechoslovak Škoda car (or a modern van by 4+ guests) with our local guide to the most intriguing spots of the Cold War era Bratislava. Explore a vast concrete housing estate, the Soviet monument Slavín, post-industrial developments, the Iron Curtain border zone and loads of communist-era architecture. The tour brings alive the fascinating story of Bratislava in the turbulent 20th century. What can you expect? Cool drive and quirky stops to see and understand: - the first prefabricated apartment block in Slovakia as well as the largest socialist housing project, Petržalka - communist-era architecture (inverted pyramid of Slovak Radio, rocket-shape TV tower Kamzík, Freedom Square) - political objects: Soviet memorial Slavín, diplomatic 1970’s hotel, 1980’s parliament, villas of former communist leaders - controversial ufo-like SNP bridge, causing destruction of the Jewish district former Iron Curtain area
Inclusions: All taxes, fees and handling charges, Beverages, Driver/guide, Live commentary on board, Local guide, Hotel pickup and drop-off (selected hotels only), Private tour, Transport by private vehicle
Exclusions: No exclusions

Wait ...What about the route? As proud Bratislavian born adventurers we created the route combining the most scenic views, must-visit spots, off the beaten path panoramas and frightening haunted places. This takes you not just to the city center, Castle hill, Slavin monument, but also to the other river bank, where you will find an external castle settlement, riverside, railway station, Presidential Palace, Prime Minister’s Palace, the famous Slovak radio pyramid turned upside down, Blue church, Horse Railway station and the new skyscraper downtown. Hearing the stories around the places you will go or stop by, together with the historical pictures and videos as well as visualisations of the parts being built, this is the most compact tour you will have ever been to. Guaranteed.
