Tahiti and Bora Bora are the most well known French Polynesian islands, thanks to their picture-perfect beaches and romantic ambiance. Indeed, these islands are ideal for handholding, with their lush landscapes and mood-setting features like lagoons and grottos. The heart-shaped island of Mo’orea makes a wonderful base for divers and snorkelers eager to explore its surrounding barrier reef system. Feeding the massive, sacred eels of Huahine is a one-in-a-lifetime way to experience an important local ritual.

I found it hard to find much information about traveling to Maupiti when we planned our French Polynesian vacation but we took a chance and am so glad we did. I hope you find the information I share helpful. Getting there - flights only come to Maupiti certain days of the week so you have to be strategic with your planning. Once you land at the tiniest, most picturesque airport you've ever seen, you will have to get on the water taxi which takes you from the motu that the airport is on to the main island. The taxi cost when we were there was 10 XPF per person - cash only. No one at the airport or on the water taxi spoke English but we were able to say "Maupiti Residence" to the various boat captains and we were pointed to the correct boat. Once you arrive on the main island, the residence host will be waiting for you with a amazingly beautiful flower lei. Then it is about a 15-20 minute ride in their vehicle. Food - you really need to be strategic because most of the stores have limited hours and there are only a couple restaurants on the island. We stayed over the weekend and a lot of things were closed. When we were picked up, the host took us to the store on the way to the residence. It is not a store that you walk around and shop, you just tell the cashier what you want and they bring it to you through a counter. We bought water, beer and things like chips/snacks. Inside the residence are the menus and phone numbers for the restaurants that deliver. It is recommended you call in your order as far in advance as possible. That was the first thing we did upon arrival. Both the restaurants we ordered from were able to understand my order. There are two snack stands next door to the property and easily walkable, but we could never figure out their hours. I believe they are more for lunch hours. Inside the home - there is a main room which contains the couch/tv area and kitchenette. The dining is on the covered porch. Then there are two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the other with two twins. The are ac units for the bedrooms which we opted to pay the surcharge to run at night. The bathroom is basic but functional. The property - there is only one other home on the property. You seriously have the most gorgeous view here. You freemhave access to bikes to explore the island and kayaks for the water. Straight out from the property is a shallow lagoon that is easily crossable by foot to a small motu. Out the patio to the right are a few other small lodges and snack shacks. To the left and around the tip of the island is a beautiful stretch of beach to walk. We walked the whole thing and never saw another person. We stayed here as part of a four island trip around French Polynesia. The accommodations are very simple, but the experience here was the most private and non-commercialized. Such a fun stop on our trip!

This Pension has room for 17 guests who all sit around the large table for communal meals. It was full when we visited for the All Saint’s Day holidays. Yet Linda and Johnny were very welcoming and always made everyone welcome despite their work load. We had the smaller one bedroom bungalow closest to the road with a double and single bed. No cupboards. Bathroom is large and has hot water but taps are hard to close from overuse (you need to push and twist at the same time). The rooms are simple but tired. A lot of trouble goes into preparing dinner with fresh produce—usually fish. But there are some vegetables. Breakfast is the usual French butter and bread with various fried local breads and some local fruit. As there is nowhere to eat on the island Linda also prepares sandwiches, French fries, burgers or omelettes for lunch. There is free WIFI but the signal is very very weak as it is throughout the Australs. The strongest signal is near the router in the dining room but some bungalows catch a signal. Very early in the morning is best as few people are on at that time. We did the island and Motu tour which are both good. But note that the Motu Piscine (Pool) doesn’t have much shade and has little reef or fish life. Personally, I would have preferred just going to Johnny’s family Motu where Linda prepares lunch. That Motu has trees and a structure for picnicking with shade. It is also more interesting for snorkeling. Prices very reasonable and in line with what you are getting. Two full days on the island is ample time to get a good taste as it is small. Linda also hires bikes to get around the island.

Nestled off the main thoroughfare lies the heavenly retreat of Te Fare Mihi. It is a place that leaves you longing for more. We were a group of 8. 6 ladies from Hawaii 1 local born lady and our fabulous friend from Papeete . We were met off our quick half hour gorgeous Ferrt ride from Papeete by the staff of Moorea Mahana Tours , an amazing activities company owned by the same proprietor of Te Fare Mihi, and shuttled off to our bungalow retreat. We passed through stunning crystal clear aqua blue water, coconut groves and a plethora of local homes on our way to this spectacular retreat . When we arrived our jaws dropped . This must be just like living in Paradise, and it is. Property: Lush colorful gardens decorate the pathway to each bungalow . Fresh banans , Logan fruit, Tiare Bush, mango trees , and hibiscus bushes welcome you with their sweet fruit and vibrant colors . Passing the 4 bungalows , you end up at a community lawn with huge dinner table under a tan thatched roof as you gaze at the calm still clear blue waters if Moorea. There are relaxing lawn chairs , a pier to jump off of and over the water lounge chairs off a plank that stairs deep into the horizon beyond . The coconut trees that off much shade and beauty caress the edges of the property adding to the vibe of our tranquility. Bungalows: There are four fabulous bungalows , with one of them beach front. Each bungalow is expertly designed with a comfortable out door patio and chairs, a quaint living space with a day bed , fully functional kitchen, 1 bedroom with queen sized bed , closet space , a safe and dresser drawers. The bathroom is large , airy and spacious. With lovely hot water and fantastic lighting to check out your tan . Sleep: It is so absolutely peaceful here and so very safe . The air conditioning in the bedroom easily cools the entire bungalow . We enjoyed fantastic breakfasts prepared by each of our bungalows every morning and we decorated our outdoor table and feasted as we watched the sun rise, and just stare in amazement at the beauty of the property and our surroundings . Dinners were our favorite as we ate, drank and sang the night away under the stars . Felicie, the owner of the property and company is an absolute gem. She is so kind, sweet and loving . She arranged through her company so many amazing days filled with fun. Please do yourself a favor and book all your activities through her. Go swim with the sharks and kiss the stingrays, or head off to one of her motus , kayak, surf, bike , or whatever your heart desires, she can make it happen. We've seen those over the water bungalows and while very pretty, it doesnt even come remotely close to how amazing and fabulous our stay was . We were absolutely heart broken to be leaving Te Fare Mihi, as it had become our paradise home . We made so many memories here. We laughed , cried, ate and slept like goddesses. I will never forget my time here and I hope to come back again. Maruru Felicie , Te Fare Mihi, and Moorea Mahana Tours

Damien picked us up at the airport very early in the morning and drove us to the apartment stopping at a small supermarket on the way - this was very helpful. He also dropped us off at the airport very early in the morning. The apartment is up a hill but after the climb [which isn't that arduous] you are rewarded with a fabulous view. We found the apartment to have everything we needed - airconditioning, fridge, kitchen facilities and even a washing machine. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well. We also enjoyed swimming in the pool. We didn't hire a car but managed to catch the bus to wherever we wanted to go. If we had stayed longer a car would have been necessary to explore the island. We enjoyed staying there and appreciated Damien's kindness.

Studio Painapo, Ideal for spending a few days in Tahiti before visiting our islands or catching the plane: restaurants, food trucks, shops, market, cruise ship and ferry dock and rental cars nearby, starting point for excursions. King size bed and sofa beds, kitchenette, dining area, private bathroom, air conditioning, wifi, Netflix. Info: [email protected]
Found this lovely little apartment on Airbnb. Spacious room, kitchenette and bathroom. We stayed in Paianapo8 which was two flights of stairs and no elevator so pack light or bring/be a strong travel buddy. AC worked great. Kitchen had pots, pans, bowls, utensils, full fridge, electric hot plate, electric kettle. We made use of free laundry (one washer and dryer in common space shared by 6 apartments). Locked common door opened by code, you’ll get your keys in a lock box inside of that door. It’s a great location, easy 10 mins walk to ferry and to an early morning boat ride to Tetiaroa. 2 mins to Catholic Cathedral and 2 mins to big market with fresh island fruits and veggies, black pearls and other souvenirs. Market closes early on Sunday at 10:45am. There are homeless that hang out on street during day and night but none that will bother you if you mind your own business. At $112 per big after taxes and fees, this is a great deal.

You probably will not find a better property location - right on a private beach (other family members live on property), just 1/2 km across to two Motus (islands), several small stores for groceries and several small restaurants within easy walking distance. Pros - location, privacy, price (for Moorea), owner has pleasant personality. Cons - many other cabins on property but most are in utter ruin (collapsing roofs, doors off, garbage around, old hulks of cars, etc - a real eyesore) - only 4 out of 6 inside lights working (didn't have bulbs), power went off several times per day whenever there was strong wind and rain (fairly frequent in rainy season) which required manual resetting on panel about 50 m down the road (we were not warned of this, but discovered it on our own) - Owner failed to respond to our initial call regarding the power outage - Owner promised to replace bedding/towels every 4 days but failed to show up until 8th day with no call in interim and only replaced them again on day 13 (apparently only due other guest leaving that day) - bare minimum dishes, cups, KFS, etc (exactly 2 of each, no more) - roof starting to get a few leaks, doors and window slats starting to rot - needs a proper cleaning. Overall, we loved the location but were highly disappointed by the unexpected lack of very simple and necessary maintenance and responsiveness of owners (we had very severe weather due cyclone Wilson and owner did NOT even check up on us until 4 days later - said she visited property but we never saw her!!) - gave us a loaner phone but when we went to use it, had no time/credit in it and no charger so absolutely useless. We gave this a 3 rating only because we loved the location and we are very used to roughing it - if you want ANY comfort, you might want to rethink this one!.

My fellow traveler and I had a wonderful experience staying at Fare Areaera. The host Carlos, and his assistant Loreli, were so helpful and cheery. Carlos spoke excellent English. We could the surf nearby at night! They also have the most delightful little dog -Fare, and a very friendly cat as well. The cottage was good, with all of the basics you would need in the kitchen. Hot water only in the shower, and we did have some issues with loose screening and a few mosquitos. Be sure and pack insect repellant if you travel to French Polynesia of course. All in all, I highly recommend Fare Areaera if you are looking for a reasonably priced place to stay where you can cook for yourself. We stayed for 10 days.

We have 3 beautiful bungalows facing the West so we have a perfect view of the sunset for all three bungalows. We have a gorgeous swimming pool for guests as well.
Each Bungalow is newly built and decorated just how you would hope your surf bungalow would be. They have amazing taste in décor. The bungalows are equipped with everything you need for cooking. They have a TV with tons of movies accessible in an easy to scroll digital directory. The hosts are great and helped with all of the questions and needs we had. The bread they delivered every morning was plenty for 2 people and was fresh and delicious. They were very accommodating and flexible with our arrival and departure times. They have a kayak and beach toys that are perfect for the beach. There is also amazing beginner and advanced surfing right outside, great to watch and participate. There is also a great place to rent surf boards just a minute's drive away. I would definitely recommend and hope to return!!! Thank you for an amazing vacation!!!!

"The worst place to stay in Bora Bora" 눉We were stolen during th night, while we were sleeping, in our bungalow. I lost US2000,00, our passports, my camera with all the pictures and, worst, I lost my chance to know Bora Bora - this property should never been announced in Booking.com: it is a tourist trap: only two bungalows in a house yard, with no security, right on the street- It is not a choice, even for free!!!!
