Despite deep-rooted racial prejudices, and economic and social disparities, love can still find its way through and bind people together. One such intense experience was when I got a chance to see a powerful theatre performance, "Driving Miss Daisy”. Staged by The Gate Theater in Chiang Mai, Thailand during 16-19 January 2020, Driving Miss Daisy is a Pulitzer Prize winning play, written by 1936-born Academy award winning Alfred Fox Uhry, based on his memories of his grandmother and her chauffeur, in times of civil rights movement in Atlanta. Stephan Turner directed this play and justly enacted the role of chauffeur Hoke, while Pamela Teves putting forth her strong performance as Miss Daisy. In those two and a half hours of theatre, we traversed through a journey of over 25 years over which a beautiful emotional bond develops between the elite Miss Daisy Werthan and her clouded chauffeur Hoke Colburn. While the actors of the play have indeed done justice to every scene, but the very best was saved for the last. The backdrop of the last scene is an old-age nursing home where Hoke and Miss Daisy’s son are paying a visit to her on Thanksgiving Day. The tender concern and love with which both share a pie could not have been enacted more justly. With all racial prejudices and other forms of inequities waning away over the years, the purity and sanctity of love that remains between the two, is simply epic. Kudos to Gates Theater Group!

Khaosan Comedy Club, AKA “The world’s most multicultural comedy club,” features side-splitting comedy shows in the famous backpackers’ paradise of Khaosan Road, located on the ground floor of the Khaosan Park Resort, inside the “Khaosan Park Hotel & Shopping” arcade. At 6pm you can see the improv comedy show, which is appropriate for all ages and fun for the whole family. The later shows (usually 8, 9, or 10 PM depending on the day), feature the best standup comedians around, are best suited to adult audiences. Professional and up-and-coming comics from all over the world, whether they are based in Asia or are merely traveling from afar can be found performing at this one-of-a-kind comedy club. Sharing a space with “Khaosan Theatre”, on some afternoons there are workshops in which participants can learn different performance-related skills, and are attended by tourists and locals alike.
Ive been to Khaosan road many times, its always the same-- Arrive in Bangkok, find cheap hotel on Khaosan, sleep off some of the jet lag, walk the streets one night and people watch (drunk tourists, lady boys, Nic-nack shopping, street food etc), and get out of there to more enticing places in Thailand ASAP! This time was different, I saw signs of 'comedy show' and was given a flier- 200bhat for the show which included a drink. Sure, why not I like comedy. Good choice! The venue was simple, small and intimate, drinks were fair priced, and a range of funny comedians doing their thing. Afterwards, we hung out with the other patrons and comedians, away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, and had great conversation all night. Made some new friends, had a great time, and got to laugh at people who were actually trying to be funny! (Usually we just laugh at the drunk tourists stumbling down Khaosan road with ladyboys in hot pursuit, this was much better) Next time and every time im on Khaosan Rd, ill pay the comedy club a visit-- you should too!

Our tickets were free when we paid to go into the Grand Palace so we went the following day. We arrived early and enjoyed a drink in the foyer. The theatre was large so plenty of seats and the show was typical Thai dancing. I really enjoyed it and it was something different. I recommend you go if you have the time

Great show! I recommend this show as something to do in the late evening in Khao Lak. Tickets are 300THB and you get a free drink in that price. Show starts at 9.45pm. You can reserve your seats on the day and pay for your tickets on arrival. No smoking inside but the show only goes for 1hr. The staff are so friendly and accommodating and the drink prices are reasonable too. The performers put on a great show, the costumes and make up are perfect. Before and after the show you can take pictures out the front with the performers and you are allowed to film or take pictures during the show. Well worth going to for a fun night out that won’t break the bank! Must see!
