Montreal's top performance hall features music, drama and more.
We wandered around the Place des Arts for a bit, but we were here to attend a performance of George Benjamin’s opera Written on Skin. Having been to a performance of his Lessons in Love and Violence in Amsterdam in 2018, we were eager to see the opera that preceded it, and made a special trip from Toronto to take it in. The Salle Wilfred Pelletier is somewhat too large, seating almost 3000, but the sight lines are very good and we had good seats. The opera was clearly not to everyone’s taste, but we found it absorbing though occasionally confusing. The three principal performers, Magali Simard-Galdes, Daniel Okulitch and Luigi Schifano, were particularly fine. We’re glad we took the trouble to attend it, and we definitely want to see and hear it again.

My wife and I had a great dinner and jazz performance by the Fuel Junkies. The food was excellent and plentiful. The music was extraordinary coming from three great sax musicians. Equally entertaining and great musicians were the two guitar players and drummer. I was able to get the last table when I made my reservation for the early show. The table was right in front of the band. The place was packed which is understandable as it is a great venue with excellent jazz performances and reasonably priced food.

Bourgie Hall is a 444-seat concert venue set in the restored Erskine and American heritage church. With high-quality acoustics and exceptional decor that incorporates 20 Tiffany stained glass windows, it hosts some 160 concerts a year, ranging from classical music to jazz, from world music to now. The hall’s dimensions make it ideal for the needs of chamber-music ensembles and string orchestras.

Friendly staff, great drinks, and excellent comedians. Been there several times this summer. It's a nice way to spend an evening. Not too expensive 5-20$ depending on the night. Catch an early show if you need to get to bed early. Get your tickets on-line and get free popcorn at the show. I love the place.

We always watch movies at this cinema, because the pulled pork poutine is so amazing so we would sometimes watch a movie just so we can enjoy the poutine. Best cinema in town!

I was born in the wrong decade last century! I wish I could have been around when clubs like House of Jazz were popular and many. It’s sad that there are fewer and fewer, so we’ll make do with this, which does not fail in presenting an example of what that golden age must have been like. The music, in our case the Taurey Butler trio was incredible. If you read anything on him you’ll see he’s compared to Oscar Peterson, and this is dead on the mark. And we’ll backed by one of the most energetic and emotive bass players, and a drummer who can make magic with the simplest of skin sets, created a night of magic. As to the foos, it was very good. Dont get me wrong, but while I enjoyed it, it is pricey, and along with drinks and the cover, this is not a cheap night. But it all comes together as an atmosphere, and if you close your eyes just a little, and ignore your bill, you may just believe your back 70 years.
