The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

Soushunan, a 110 years old Machiya, is a traditional wooden townhouse. Here you can experience playing the Koto, which is a traditional Japanese instrument and indispensable for formal ceremonies in Japan.Harumi Shimazaki, who is a professional player of Koto, will teach you how to play the Koto.Within the lesson, you will also get to know about the modest and kind spirit of traditonal Japanese.
The lesson with Harumi was a wonderful and memorable experience. Her house is beautiful, her teaching is patient and precise, and the quiet and intimacy of the private lesson was a perfect antidote to the almost overwhelming crowds at the tourist sites. Harumi is a very accomplished musician, and has created a lesson plan that is just the right balance of challenging and achievable. The duets - after you have “mastered” (?!) your part - were really touching and joyful to be a part of. Great experience - do it! Guaranteed to be a highlight of your trip

A typhoon was heading towards Japan on the day that I happened to schedule my cooking class. Wakana was fully prepared! She had even gone to the grocery store the day before to buy everything, in case the stores were closed. Given that so many tourist locations were closed because of the typhoon, this cooking class was a huge part of my short trip to Kyoto, and it was wonderful. First, can I just say that her website is very cute? I've never seen something so adorable. She was very on top of scheduling (I was not, I accidentally scheduled for the wrong weekend at first, and she handled the mistake wonderfully) and planned out some great side dishes. My main dish was okonomiyaki, which I had only just realized after trying it elsewhere in Japan, isn't my favorite, but it was very cool to learn how to do it. One of the main side dishes was a seaweed salad, which was delicious and healthy. She even had a sampling of Japanese desserts and performed a Japanese tea ceremony. Best of all, she had the recipes typed up for me to take home, including the names of all the desserts! Wakana was fantastic at explaining Japanese culture and answering my questions about everything from chopstick etiquette to how traditional Japanese archery works. She had a lot of good recommendations for activities to do next, even with the typhoon. I would highly recommend this cooking class as a wonderful way to experience Japanese culture.

Feel the spirit of the samurai as you cut a roll of tatami with a real samurai sword. First, we will dress you in a traditional kimono and hakama. Then we will give you a lesson in the history of swords in Japan, and how they influenced samurai culture. After that, you will get a tutorial in wielding a sword under the guidance of a master of Iaido, the ancient art of samurai swordplay. You will learn how to safely unsheathe and sheathe a sword without looking. Finally, you will get a chance to try out your new skills by slicing through a roll of tatami.
I booked with Sensei Kawata and mentioned that I was a Iaido student from Canada. He therefor tailored a special class for my level. I found him to be a very impressive sensei. It was an absolute honour to learn from this true Samurai. He permitted me to wield swords from his collection, some as old as 450 years old. This was an authentic foray into the samurai culture from a man who was practically born with a Katana in hand. Wether you are a Iaido student or just curious about Samurai culture dont miss this opportunity. I hope to renew this experience on my next visit to Japan.

Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run his authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. I'm Yoko, assistant of my father's studio. He is a great craftsman. I support him and act as an interpreter to visitors in this one of a kind experience for anyone who wants to feel real local culture. We have two kinds of workshop like " bookmaking workshop" & " Embossing workshop " both traditional & professional tools & skills use. ( The price of each class is JPY 3000 ( cash on the spot/ 6 years old 〜). The book you made or embossed book can be special souvenir for you or somebody you love. We are very welcome to have a family ( From 6 years old could be possible for kids course )
