Ami Kyoto

Your opportunity to be part of Kyoto! "Ami Kyoto" provides traditional Japanese cultural experience in English for foreign visitors. You can experience Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement, Calligraphy and Tea ceremony in our 80-year-old traditional Kyoto townhouse. The foundation of Japanese traditional culture was laid in the Muromachi period. At that time, people called "ami" protected and promoted the emerging culture, including noh dance and the tea ceremony. They were priests who served a shogun or feudal lord, and sowed the seeds of our classical aesthetic values. Ami emphasized equality, virtue, harmony and calmness in their contribution to cultural development. "Ami Kyoto" continues to spread their spirituality which still underlies the Japanese culture of today.

We spent a delightful morning with Mayuko learning to make bento boxes with panda rice balls. Mayuko is extremely friendly and positive, and a great teacher - we learned some cool techniques which we've since incorporated into our own cooking since returning to our home country, and my wife went out shopping straight after the class to get equipment to make bento boxes of our own. We did a few different activities and classes while we were in Japan for a month and this was easily the most fun we had. I heartily recommend this class to anyone who wants to have a fun morning with a great host and learn some cool things about Japanese cuisine.

Kyoto Samurai Experience This is an excellent chance for visitors to get a firsthand look into the world of the samurai. Get a glimpse into the philosophies of Bushido (the way of the warrior) and try your hand at wielding a real katana. Afterwards, practice some inward reflection with Zen meditation, used by the samurai to calm their minds during battle.

I am a big fan of learning as much about a culture when I travel as I can and I love spending time with the locals to do that. When I saw a cooking experience in Japan, I knew we needed to jump on that despite a reluctant (non-cooking) husband. We picked 2 of our favorite items we like to eat (although nearly everything in Japanese cuisine is delicious in our books) and booked our time with Yuca. We were not disappointed in the slightest and had a most wonderful time learning to make Ramen and Gyoza from scratch. My husband even said he enjoyed it far more than he ever imagined! WIN! We were invited into her home to cook with her and I not only came away with new recipes for our home menu rotation, but the need for a miso muddler and a ginger ginger (we were staying in Asakusa at the time and this was a quick and easy errand to run the same day!). I also bought her first cookbook and will subscribe to her YouTube channel so I can learn even more. We highly recommend this experience for anyone else who wants to dive deeper into a culture and have a wonderful experience! Thank you Yuca!
