Yayo is a wonderful teacher and host, she welcomed me in her home and taught me how to make okonomiyaki and takoyaki. We also made matcha tea and taiyaki. Machiko was the model of gracious hospitality, meeting me and my friend at a nearby subway station and walking us to her beautiful home. She warmly welcomed us and shared some of her family history before we got to the task at hand, learning how to make okonomiyaki and takoyaki. My friend and I learned so much and it is evident that Machiko loves sharing her culture and heritage with visitors, as she was very generous in taking the time to help us understand the ingredients and the various cooking techniques. It was a highlight of mu visit to Osaka and I would not hesitate to recommend her cooking class to other visitors to Osaka who wish to learn more about Japanese cuisine. I would encourage people to register for classes with Machiko, as she is a kind, thoughtful and patient instructor. It was a wonderful way to spend an evening and I look forward to an opportunity in the future, if I return to Osaka, to attend another class with Machiko and perhaps to learn how to make Japanese sweets. My sincere thanks to you Machiko for spending time with us and ensuring such an enriching, fun, experience.

Signed up for both the seasonal dessert (It was a Halloween themed dessert when I went!) making activity and the Takoyaki making activity and I had so much fun! You can book a slot online & they’ll send you a confirmation email that you’ll have to present at the counter on the day of the activity. The site’s in English so no problems there! ???? The instructor, I believe her name was Luna, was wonderful. Her instructions were simple to understand and despite the language barrier, we were able to communicate really well in simple English and Japanese. She was very encouraging and bubbly and that made the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. ???? The Takoyaki took a day to dry and the parfait took about 3 days to dry, so I recommend you do this at the start of your Osaka trip so it dries before you leave & you can pack it into your luggage without much trouble! I did a solo experience and had a good time. I’d definitely recommend it this to everyone whether you’re travelling alone, with friends or with your family. I imagine little kids would have a blast doing this hands-on art activity! Thank you, Design Pocket Osaka! ☺️
