The church is set on the top of Long Melford Green just to the side of Kentwell Hall - also well worth a visit, along with Melford Hall (National Trust) just across the road. This church is stunning and with the lovely lady chapel at the end is the largest church in the country that isn't a Cathedral. The beautiful stain glass windows tell a story and include characters from Alice in Wonderland and Beatrix Potter. (Melford Hall is where Beatrix Potter used to stay with her animals and they house the original Jemima Puddleduck.) The church has guided tours and a shop. Ensure you visit this beautiful church on your walk around Long Melford - so many stay on the High Street and don't go any further than the bridge opposite the Bull Hotel. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside where you can walk for miles.

In order to see the paintings you first need to arrange a convenient time with the very helpful church warden Linda Berry e mail address [email protected] Parking is by the church gate and do wear warm clothes as church freezing! plus a £1 coin to operate the ceiling lights. Once lit the work is stunning two very different depictions in the chancel and nave roof spaces. Interesting medieval glass panes in one window so delicate. Don't forget to look at the graves of William and Mildred Holland. I had read The Huntingfield Paintress by Pamela Holmes before visiting which gave insight into the world of rural life in the 1850-60s. Well worth a visit then I'd recommend dropping into the Huntingfield Arms.

Spectacular grade 1 listed medieval church in the Church of England with lots to see and an extensive programme of worship services and community activities. You're always welcome. Admission is free. St Mary's is the civic church of Bury St Edmunds and is one of England's most historic as well as one of the biggest. The spectacular west window is the largest of any parish church in the country. The 15th Century hammerbeam angel-roof is internationally recognised. Visit the tomb of Mary Tudor (Queen of France and favourite sister of Henry VIII) at the east end and lots more besides. Our volunteer stewards will try to answer any of your questions. St Mary's remains a beautiful peaceful place to enjoy stillness and to pray.
I was more impressed with the church than the nearby cathedral. Literally awe inspiring, plenty to see, with some really excellent volunteers. Well worth the visit.
