The 10 Best Churches & Cathedrals in Scottish Highlands, Scotland

June 15, 2021 Roseanne Arnett

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

East Church

This picturesque ramble starts by the shoreline, works past the church, with commanding views right and left to two Firths. Ignore the oil rigs. It slowly winds up hill, past a Neolithic rock hunting ground and pushes upwards quite steeply to reach a viewpoint, with one seat. Take sometime here to admire the view and look for dolphins, because this is the best viewpoint on the walk. There’s absolutely no view when you reach the small car park at the top!

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St. Cumin's RC Church

Having established a residence in Morar, and conscious of his tenants moving westward, Simon Lord Lovat decided that the time had come to provide 'a more suitable place of worship than the former inconvenient and unsightly chapel at Bracara.' The site he chose lay at the foot of Cruach Bheoraid looking across to the islands.

(It's my window view from lochside cottages onto st John's church & loch Leven ,one of the most beautiful views in Scotland .

Inverness Cathedral was build from 1866 to 1869, on the shore of the River Ness, as the Protestant Cathedral Church of St Andrews, belonging of the Scottish Episcopal Church. This Cathedral have an impressive external aspect, with two huge towers, and a carved portal. Inside the Cathedral we admired the large nave, with two side galleries. We saw some massive columns, some beautiful stained glasses, carved wooden pews, and a wonderful mosaic on the floor. The ten bells of this cathedral sound a special song. Also, we visited an interesting souvenir shop. The Cathedral worth a visit.

Nigg Old Church

Nigg Old Church, in the Highlands of Scotland, is a fine example of a Scottish parish church and - since it houses a magnificent Pictish monument of the late eighth century, carved with Pictish symbols and Christian imagery - it is likely that it stands on what has been a place of Christian worship for at least 1200 years. It has, to this day, an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. The church is open daily from 10am to 5pm by a wonderful group of volunteers from 1 April to 31 October. Nigg Old Church is also a wonderful venue for weddings for up to 140 guests.
