Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel

Built in 1683, this pastel pink church is the city's most recognizable landmark.

The centerpiece and focal point and one of the best things to do in San Miguel Allende is the unmissable church. La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel or the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is as impressive as it is massive. This is arguably the most photogenic spot in the city inside and out. Enjoy the view from the well-manicured garden in the plaza directly in front of the church that looks almost like an ornate pinkish orange cake! On Sundays, the plaza out front is filled with families and their children enjoying the park. The Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar in the Rosewood Hotel is a great place to have a cocktail enjoying both the sunset and this amazing church

Templo de Nuestra Senora de la Salud

This distinctive church is in the PLAZA CIVICA near the Mercado Ignacio Ramirez in Centro. Some people refer to this Plaza, near the Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri Church at the top (east) of Calle Insurgentes) as "the horse statue park." It has a bronze Equestrian statue of Colonel Allende in the middle of the plaza. The church of Our Lady of Health - La Salud - has a stone shell design over the entrance - and cinema buffs will remember Antonio Banderas coming out of this church with guns a'blazing in the locally shot film ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. This the shell design comes from St.James of Spain (Santiago) who used a shell for baptism ceremonies. Inside the small narrow church - the domed ceiling uses the four virtues stressed in Catholic Christianity - . the altar paintings illustrates the parable of the Good Shepherd from the New Testament. To your left is a side altar with a statue of "The Child of Health." This infant fills a local "need" in a community where infant mortality has been high. Around the glass case that cradles him are snapshots of recovered babies. To the right of the main altar is a "hidden" chapel referred to as the TRES MARIAS (Three Marias) - very private & simple. This church has the only altar in this area dedicated to Saint Cecilia - the Patron Saint of Music & Musicians. Her feast & fiesta day is November 22nd. Many musicians will come here to play for her on that day.
