Petrus en Pauluskerk

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The reason the relatively small village of Loppersum (less than 3,000 inhabitants) has this gigantic church is, it was the seat of a dean heading a chapter that encompassed 20 villages in the surroundings. The whole complex came about over a period of some 300 years. The earliest brick structures date from 1270. The massive late 14th century tower with a firm foundation of boulders stands out. Before the Reformation most churches were dedicated to saints. Peter and Paul were popular. You can still observe symbols like Peter's key (to heaven) and Paul's sword (to maintain justice) in the church. End of the 1500s the Dutch reformed 'purified' the structure. For instance the frescos in Mary's chapel were whitewashed and sculptures were removed. Instead of worshipping idols and saints, more prominence was given to the pulpit from where the word of God was taught. Note the hexagonal late 17th century oak pulpit with ornate woodcarving. If you want to visit the church go to the village 'wereldwinkel', where they have a key. Entrance fee 1€

Jacobuskerk Zeerijp

Reviewed By Robert937 - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

While other churches in Groningen underwent significant changes through the ages, this one in Zeerijp stayed the same since 1350. Built in Roman-Gothic style the red brick structure is still impressive, as is the tower built about 100 years later. I especially liked the amazing masonry and colorful arabesque ornamentation. When I visited on a Monday afternoon someone was playing the organ, but there was not a soul to be seen. Great initiative of the Groninger kerken association to open 50 churches to the public. Zeerijp not only keeps the church open, but also displays some information brochures after entering through the double door space at the northside (tochtportaal).
