Bayonne's Cathedral, with its twin spires and surrounded by narrow streets really dominates the old part of this lovely city. While the Gothic cathedral is impressive from the outside (including the cloisters, the flying buttresses and the twin sprires - which in fact were not finished until the 19th century), it was the church's interior we found truly beautiful. Some superb stained-glass windows and exquisite wall paintings to be seen.

A first church existed from the 10th century to Urrugne, the building was destroyed at the beginning of the 16th century. The church is completely rebuilt in 1550 in a Renaissance style. It also undergoes the influence of the cultural architecture of Gipuzkoa. The bell tower hall, of a height of 45 m, is decorated on its south facade, of a sundial with the currency " Vulnerant omnes, ultima necat "- " Every hour hurts the last one kill ". The inside is worth seeing for its greatness and its choir decorated with tapestries of the monks of Belloc. It is registered on the inventory of Historic monuments since 1925. For more information you visit it with the tourist office in July and August.

We took a detour en route to Espelette to visit this church which is a fascinating example of Basque architecture with several galleries built around the walls and the graveyard has rounded gravestones and designs that are reminiscent of some of the Celtic designs back home in Wales. Very peaceful and worth stopping by if you are in the area.
